#68:Advice from the Matriarch

Kamiko Akiyama is the Matriarch. As such she takes responsibility for the education of the children to the extent that their families are willing to allow her to do so. Some families are incapable of providing the proper education for themselves. There are some things that some people just can NOT do. Their brains aren’t wired for it. Education is free for the taking on the ‘mind net’. Guidance, however is a rather more dear and some parent’s can’t do it. Some children, and adults, need guidance in some areas more so than others.

Kamiko Akiyama provided it. Early child development is one of her specialties. If the truth be known she’s a polymath in the field of Psychology and all of the ‘ologies’ that have spun off from it, or even broadly related. She has doctorates and post graduate degrees beyond counting.

Her goal in life, however, was not to impress academia. He aim was to develop sane minds so that there will be a sane society some day. The present one is anything but. She has been remarkably successful on her Island. She continued her teaching and research on the Banana Slug.

She frequently presided over sessions in VR regarding any number of subjects. Today the subject was problems and how to deal with them. Anyone was welcome.

Oddly enough there was always Carl. Carl attended almost every session no matter the topic. He rarely spoke but she could feel him.

“Children” She said in session one day. “If you have a problem then that’s a bad thing. Right?”

“Yes Ma’am” her class had replied.

“No” The Matriarch had said “That would be wrong. Be thankful for problems. The only people who don’t have problems are those who are dead. All of their problems are solved. Don’t think of them as problems. Think of them as opportunities to display technical and managerial excellence. Be thankful for your problems. They provide you with the opportunity to apply what you have already learned and to learn new stuff.”

Her class might have averaged ten years old at that time. That had been a big chunk for them to chew on.

“What happens if you have several problems.“ The Matriarch had been relentless. Her class knew this was a test of sorts. They hated to fail expectations of any kind, much less those of the Matriarch.

“Well Ma’am.“ her class had considered the question then picked a spokesman to take the heat. “I guess we’d have lots of opportunities then?”

“That would be right,” The Matriarch had said with evident pride. “and many times, if you keep your wits about you, you can use one problem to solve another problem.”

Her class thought about that and decided that the Matriarch definitely had a point. She usually did.

it's hard to tell what’s true or when they are lying isn’t it? It seems that they are more interested in influencing public opinion than they are reporting the facts.
