Chapter 110: “That’s Horrible!”

.......................................................................................................................................................................................

Shaniqua was outraged.” Why did they do something like that to you?”

“It no more horrible than you exercising a muscle to make it stronger” Jenny replied. In fact that is a very good analogy. Think of me as a mental muscle that has grown MUCH stronger. But I’m STILL one of your muscles. Like I said earlier. I’m the result of the merger of several agents. You are the result of thousand if not many million. By comparison, The agents compared to me are weak. Compared to you I am weak. Oh I know that it might not seem that way but my scope is much more limited than yours. I’m a specialist. You are not. You are a ‘Society of Mind.” By that analogy I’m a very limited individual member of it.. You can existed without me. I can NOT exist without you.”

“Hmmm.” I said. " I just thought of something. Why does this remind me of ‘monkeysphere’ and ‘Dunbar’s number?”

“That because it’s exactly what it is” Kitty said "the same principle but on a much more basic level”

And she was gone.

“Now I’m totally confused” Shaniqua said "Will someone please explain?”

So we did.

SPECULATIVE FICTION

Sometimes I also comment on the news

Sometimes it's hard to tell fiction from the news.

Sort:

I had to look up monkeysphere, which led to Dunbar's number. It's interesting. 150 people, more or less, that know each other very well. So, for people like us, which don't play well with others, what does that say about us?

Ummm. I hate graphs. Tell me in simple English, my good man. Where does that leave us? Where does that leave people who always feel left out of everything?

Wouldn't it be interesting to find out that the reason why we have to much mental illness and people trying to kill each other, is because we don't "groom" each other anymore? Wouldn't it be interesting if the lack of physical contact is what's causing people to feel alienated, and then they go off and shoot other people?

the graph is a standard Bell Curve...
the center of which is an average.
(I forget which, mean, median or something)
it means that 34.1 percent are within one standard deviation of the average..above or below.
that means that ON AVERAGE, 70% of the population have a dunbar's number of about 150

the graph also shows that 13.6% of the population are both above and below that average by TWO sigmas( standard deviation) ...ditto two sigma's (2.1%) three sigmas (.01%) and so on. Depending on the size of the population there can be a LOT of sigmas.

I figure I'm about seven sigma's south by that measure..

It's NOT lack of physical contact...it's the reverse..TOO MUCH.
That's what causes people to go insane (one reason)

I'd have to argue, just based on what I've seen. We, as a society, no longer talk to each other, we stare at computer screens and cellphones. We go out to eat, but we don't look at each other, we look at little screens. So far, every lone gunman has been solitary, had no friends, no lovers, was on psych meds.
I'm interested in why you say we've too much much physical contact?

They were on pscyh meds. ..that's true..they drive people CRAZY

.NOT a lone wolf..that's a 'myth',
had no friends is a myth too.
but it doesnt matter.
suppose they were driven crazy (discount the drugs) by the crowding.
RatUtopia bears this out.

um..based on what you have SEEN?
how many mass shooters have you SEEN?
or based upon what the MainStream Media tells you.
how accurate have they proven them selves to be?

Yes, I've read about that, and that could make sense. I'm not sure that I believe in the too much contact, hypothesis. Just because you live in an overcrowded city doesn't mean that you have any contact with people. Having lived in this damned city for 7 years, I still don't know the names of my neighbors, or even see them.
It was the same when I lived in Dallas. Even when I lived twenty feet away from my neighbor, or less, I didn't know them and never saw them.
That's why I think it's the not enough contact hypothesis.

you just proved it.
you lived cheek to jowl..and didn't know their names.
how healthy is that.
do you know the names of your neighbors now?
(what town do you live in?)

monkeysphere's are much healthier ....

For mental health they definitely are.
