Chapter 106: “So you’re just going back to work?

”
I asked her.
She nodded. "I have to.”
Living with her was a treat. Shaniqua had been surprised by the existence of the Quintessence and learned to love it like I did. I enjoyed teaching her.
“I can get used to that” She had said...and she did. But now, apparently she felt the time of healing and play was over. It was time to resume what she was doing before we met.
“Tell me again why you are going back to work.” I asked her.
“It’s simple” she said " All that it takes for evil to flourish is for good men (or women) to do nothing. The Mayor is evil. City Hall is evil. The whole system the way they use it is evil. I don’t intend to do nothing. I’m going to do SOMETHING. Besides those thugs ruined my favorite dress.”
I told her. " How can that be when you were sleeping naked when his goon abducted you? You were naked when we met!”
"So were you if I recall " she replied. "but it was the time before that. When they ‘interrogated me’ in the police station not only did they ruin my favorite dress but they also ruined a nice pair of hose. I got a runner in them.”
“The horror, the horror.” I said "I can definitely understand your anger. Go ahead then but be careful. I’m here to help if you need me.”
“Ok... I’ll keep in touch” she said as she went out the door. She was still wearing the veil.
She wasn’t gone long. When she came back she was in tears. They were tears of rage.
“The newspaper is gone. The building, ....it’s been burned.” She said "There’s nothing there any more but a pile of ash and charred timbers.”
It had apparently been an old building. Much like the place that I had once lived in. All wood. Easy to set fire to and quick to burn. There was no doubt in my mind that it was Arson.
“The Mayor?” I asked.
“Who else?” she replied. "Either that or one of the people I fired, or several, or all of them. I’ve made some enemies.
“That means you’ve stood for something, according to Churchill.” I told her.” and you have..and you do.”
Hmmm.” I mused. "You know what? I bet they think you are dead.”
I was right. There had even been an obituary in the newspaper of a neighboring town. There had even been a closed casket funeral. It had rated a few minutes on TV. It was real purty.
“I wonder who in that casket?” Shaniqua said in a haunted voice.
