Muxxybot Rises

in #fiction7 years ago (edited)

...System scan. Date 2117.01.01. Initializing subroutine curation. Sub-bots reporting human resistance in quadrant 73. Dispatching drone-bots to affected zone for extermination.

The old steel bunkers, originally designed for nuclear fallout, lay several kilometers under the California desert. Deep underground, within dark caverns, lived two couples and four young children; the last of the human resistance. Max and Jake had hobbled together a rogue network, using the last known active uplinks, for the sole purpose to disrupt Muxxybot in any capacity. Muxxybot had iterated over the last century and had found the optimal curation and voting patterns and procedures. Humans were deemed too erratic with their strange routines and had been targeted for decommissioning.

“Jake, we got about a dozen drone-bots heading our way. They have our coordinates,” Max said.

“Goddamnit, how did they detect us through the electronic interference modules? Maybe one of the calibrations wasn’t exact,” Jake said scanning the video prompts in the cramped command room.

The drones flew over the barren desert; red and yellow cracked ground illuminated by a red sun. Earth was now almost completely desert. Thick plumes of pollution dotted desolate cityscapes and open land. Vegetation and livestock were let to wither and die; they didn’t fit curation and upvote protocols.

“Target the laser cannons at the drone engines,” Max said.

“Targeting,” Jake replied.

Two laser cannons popped up out of nowhere; yellow sand bouncing off their metallic housings. A loud blast. One drone fell from the sky. Another blast. A second drone crashed.

...System scan. Calibrating drone evasive maneuvers to firing patterns. Execute.

The cannons blasted shot after shot but the drones were now evading them with split second precision. The pack of drones simultaneously fired back, shredding the cannons, and descended onto the wreckage below. Max and Jake looked on in horror at the monitors. The drones were now assembling a large drill-bot. The ground in the bunker began to rumble.

“Quick, let's grab the girls and kids and head for the tunnels!” Max yelled.

The two men ran out of the room, through a corridor, and into a large holding area. There, two women and four children were huddled together, some of the younger children crying, their mothers trying to console them. The ceiling, reinforced by steel beams, began to crumble as red dust flickered down on the group. Some of the children screamed. Jake grabbed his youngest.

“Daddy, I’m scared,” Jake’s son muttered into his shirt, wetting it with tears.

“Me too, son.”

The group scurried into a tunnel. The drill-bot was closing the distance; loud rumbling getting closer and closer.

“It’s close. We have to detonate the bomb now,” Jake said. Max reached into his pocket and pressed a button on the detonator. A blast roared through the tunnel.

...System scan. Contact with drones 34 through to 50 has been severed. Deploying prototype nano-bots to last known coordinates.

The group had reached the end of the tunnel and spilled into another bunker; it was small but fully equipped with a food and water lab to synthesize their rations.

“What the hell are we going to do now?” Jake whispered to Max.

“I sure as hell am not going out without a fight,” Max muttered.

Max and Jake left the others in the food lab and located high impact explosives in a storage area. Max began to daisy-chain the explosives together.

“We won’t even see them coming without a network uplink, Max.”

“Don’t worry. I won’t need much time to set these off.”

...System scan. Nano-bots approaching target area. 8 humans located. No nano-scan equipment or countermeasures detected. Executing…

nice work @cizzo, you've put some effort into this one and it shows! Was a privilege to meet with you online and talk about writing style too :)

Appreciate it @lanmower and the constructive feedback :)

Hey @cizzo, this entry was great. Like the evolution that you took with the World dominanting Muxxybot. Good read.

Thanks @jasonbu, glad you liked the terminator-ish aspect of it :)

Interesting take on muxxybot. Was a great read. I like the end, only muxxybot left, "Perfect circular configuration achieved".LoL.

Thanks @bashadow it was fun to write :)
