Part 4.

The man forced his eyes open and propped himself on one elbow. He looked at his hands. Shutting his eyes he screamed. It was the same scream Bob had heard from far off.

“Not again,” the man said.

He rolled onto his side curling up into a ball. Tears streamed down his face. Bob knelt down beside him. He placed his hand on his shoulder, thick strands of fur pricking his fingers.

“It’s okay,” Bob said.

“You don’t understand.”

The man rolled onto his back, his face streaked with blood and dirt.

“I’m the killer.”

Bob sprang to his feet. A rustling in the trees. Turning their heads towards it they saw a deer. It looked at them, frozen. They looked at the deer for a while before it scurried off. The man grabbed the shotgun by the barrel and placed it against his temple.

“Do it."

“Are you fucking crazy?”

“If you don’t do this right here right now this is going to keep happening over and over."

Bob grabbed the hilt of the gun to pull it away but the man firmly stuck the barrel to his head.

“I... I can’t.”

“Do it!”

Betty put the rack upright. She was placing greeting cards back in their little trays. Beautiful sunsets, forests, beaches; the postcards were little portals to wonderful places. She looked at each one, dusting it off and carefully placing it back. Once the racks had all been filled and organized she looked around. No more broken glass, everything arranged. Buddy had been watching her every move, head between his paws. He let out a whine every once in a while, Betty came over and stretched behind his ears, then got back to work. She untied the dog’s leash. Purple and yellow flowers were strewn across the gravel road. She didn’t know how they got there and didn’t notice them last night. She bent down and picked up a purple flower.

Twirling it in her fingers she pressed it up against her nose. She took the flower and tucked it behind her ear. She walked with Buddy. Stopping at at the edge of the road she looked back at the flowers. The sun streamed through the trees. Buddy panted, his tongue lolling out of his mouth. Birds chirped. A scream broke through the trees. A gun went off.
