The Strays -Chapter 2

in #fiction7 years ago

Screaming. Struggling. Rough hands gripping and mauling. Loud rumbling thundered through her head. Mama’s screams mixing with her own.

They wrapped her in cloth and she couldn’t see; Couldn’t claw her way out. Her heart felt it would explode from her chest. Visions of Mama kept flashing before her, Them holding her back, her beautiful face contorted in fear. Reaching for Digit. Calling and crying.

The Door closing on her.

Digit caught The Now and breathed deep, sharpening her usable senses. Harsh smells assaulted her nostrils and hurt her head. A low drone hummed through her body. The transport vessel she was in regularly bumped and jolted, twisting her stomach further. She could hear Them murmuring calmly but didn’t understand the words.

After some time, the vessel came to a stop. Digit was carried amongst caustic sounds and acrid smells. She could hear more of Them rushing about. Her heart beat in her ears.

They lowered her to the hard ground and wrestled with the cloth. Every muscle she had was ready. Her lungs were on fire from holding her breathing to almost nothing. She could see an opening in the folds. She heard Them move away. Moving to lengthen the opening, she appraised the sounds, then ever so slowly stretched further to get a look at her surroundings.
There was no color, there was only gray. Every surface was sharp lined and hard, shiny with wetness. She recognized Them walking away, their strange gaits moving to turn a corner.

Digit acted with little thought. She ran after Them, knowing that if she lost Them she would never find Home and Mama.

She reached the corner just as They closed themselves into a vessel. She pushed herself faster, she had to catch up. The vessel pulled away then gained speed. Tears flew from Digit’s eyes as she continued running, watching the vessel quickly becoming smaller as it grew further away.

Her legs gave out at the same time as her hope.

She collapsed against the damp wall as a jagged, unrelenting panic encompassing her. She gasped and gulped for air, there didn’t seem to be any left. Flashes of Mama’s face tore at her insides. She realized sharp spikes of rain were pattering upon her, but she didn’t move. There were Others like Them rushing by, but They gave no notice to Digit. She didn’t care anyway.

Her dejected body took her back to where They had abandoned her. Moving automatically, she slowly made her way to a low overhang, dropped to a pile of litter, and tried not to think about how Mama could have driven the cold and pain away.
