Well Looky Here! We got ourselves a Friday Feast for #FFF!!! ~ #yeahboiiiiiiii

in #fff5 years ago

Got a phone call at about 3 this afternoon wondering if I wanted to join my brother and his family at my dads for dinner. My dad's wife was the one calling, she was making Bobo de camarao, a Brazilian dish. Makes sense, as she's born and raised from Brazil.

I started my plate out with a generous serving of cooked rice. I don't know what it is, but anyone who was raised south of the US just knows how to make rice. I've never been disappointed, and this was no exception. And seeing as rice was the vehicle for this dish, it was crucial to get it right, and she nailed it.

Next up, I doused that rice in a simmered cassava based sauce with shrimp.

As I mentioned earlier, my dad's wife is from Brazil, so I assume now that she knows how to cook Cassava. Because after a quick study on it, it appears that Cassava contains cyanide, and it needs to be properly cooked to get rid of it. Well, my fingers are crossed. Wish me luck! If I die, I can at least go to my grave with a full and content belly.

Lastly, this is one of her staples. A salsa of sorts, but not. It's tough to describe it honestly. I just know she makes it all the time and it is the perfect compliment to almost anything. I could eat her food for daysssssssss..

So thanks, Silvana, for a great delicious meal! Happy #fff you crazy steem lovers. Have a great weekend and Easter Sunday!

Chow down!

Good Luck

I came down to the message board immediately to say something cuz I thought it was curry. I saw cici said casava so, wait! :time out: I went back and started at the beginning.

That looks so good, @intothewild, lucky you. Happy Food fight, sir, it’s great to see you again! Your dad is a lucky man. Happy Easter to you and yours.

Haha, no curry here my friend. Although I can definitely see why you would think that. My dad is a lucky man, she is really good for him. Happy Easter to you and pura, as well. Cheers!

There isn’t much better than a little “foreign” influence in the new making department. I wonder is people from other counties think the same about us here in the US.
“Dang, That guy from the US make a killer bowl of Fruit Loops!”

Dude, I seriously make a killer bowl of Reese's Puffs! I could start my own restaraunt selling only bowls of Reese's Puffs. Ok, probably not, but I can dream. Thanks for chiming in!

DAHAHAHAHA I am known as the toast master around my house 😉

Hey, @intothewild.

Okay. That does look good. You're sure she's not trying to poison you? :)

I did not know that cassavas could be dangerous to eat. Seems a little unfair, given they're actually used in cooking. Still, I think I'd eat it, too. :)

I hope she's not trying to poison me! Considering I'm still here, typing this, I think I'm in the clear. Maybe my brief research was too big of a call of alarm, because according to @cicisaja, the market bought cassava is good to go, no cyanide. So that's a relief.

From what I was reading, it sounds like the levels are fairly low, anyway, kind of like arsenic or other poisons/toxins that occur naturally. However, if there's a way to grow it out of it, then even better. :)

I've heard only good things about cassava, so I doubt people are dropping like flies from eating them.

Otherwise it would be Cassava and Old Lace. :) *I gave him cassava juice, and I didn't even have to poison it with arsenic!"

The cassava based sauce looks delicious. Any meal with a creamy sauce served over rice is a go for me.
Matter of fact almost any type of food is a go for me.

Any meal with a creamy sauce served over rice is a go for me.

I'll second that! And third the almost any type of food!

Yaayyy... cassava is the based of tapioca flour 😉 none ever really dies because eating cassava, even the rotten one if you knew how to treat it😊 there's a type that really dangerous to eat, but not the one that available in the market😊 I assumed.

Delicious dish @intothewild ... love it! I'm from Indonesia where rice and cassava are parts of our main food here😊

Thanks for clarifying! I really liked it and read some good things about it too after doing more research. I'm gonna have to go buy some and play around with it and see what else there is to do.

I'm lucky enough to have a Brazilian friend, and I can attest to the fact that she and her mama can definitely throw down some delicious food! I don't know that I've heard of this particular dish so I'll have to ask next time I see her. Looks good to me!

Brazilians are just the best, aren't they?! To top it off, they can cook like no other, and I am more than happy to be on the eating end of things. Let me know if she knows about it or not! Thanks for stopping by, @plantstoplanks.

Where’s our invite. That food looks delish and I bet she knows exactly what she’s doing in the kitchen. I didn’t know cassava had cyanide in it. I just discovered cassava flour, cassava is pretty popular in Central America, and started making yuca fries… do yuca fries contain cyanide too? Damn it, is that why I woke up feeling a bit hungover today? They are freaking delicious though 😋. Lucky you getting to feast on some Brazilian goods without having to make it yourself. Happy food fight @intothewild!

My door is always open, however if I were you, I would keep following your path of central and S. America, seems to be working well for you guys. That, and MN is pretty far north, it gets cold here.....like realllllllyyy cold, not sure if that's your cup of tea or not. But we lucked out with a 70 degree Easter here today, so chalk that up as a win!

I was reading that cassava is also sometimes referred to as Yuca, especially here in the US. So yeah, I'm pretty sure it's got cyanide, but apparently the stuff you buy at the market is clear of it, so I think maybe you just had too much to drink, haha! Happy fff right back atcha!

Yeah, you can keep the cold. We are from California so that makes us total sissy’s when it comes to cold 🥶.

I also did some research after reading your post and apparently there are two kinds of yuca, sweet and bitter. The yuca that’s sold in stores in the US are the sweet kind and those yuca have very minuscule traces of cyanide. I imagine the yuca sold here in Costa Rica are also the sweet variety, and hopefully they are also clear of cyanide 🤷🏼‍♀️ Otherwise just boiling them (which is a necessary part of preparing them) cooks it all out- I believe 🥴

Edit: no drinking over here ‍♀️‍♀️
