Celebrations of Nowruz Festival yesterday
Nowruz is the Iranian or Persian New Year and since my roots are from these regions this festival holds a lot of significance in my traditions. Nowruz falls on the day of the Equinox and also marks the onset of Spring season and hence it is celebrated as a New Year. This festival is majorly celebrated in Iran and in Central Asia regions.
There are some very specific rituals to be performed in this festival. A table is set with variety of things representing different parts of our life like birth, health, beauty, patience, strength, prosperity and so on. I do not set the table but I make a visit to my other Irani friends' homes to pay respect to the traditions. Nowruz symbolizes revival and renewal. Like as the spring sets in, nature starts blooming and that's what this festival symbolizes revival and renewal.
Every year we also have a community gathering in Muscat at one of our Irani friends' home, where the couple invites the entire community. In Muscat there are around 200 Parsees based. Not all of them come, but around 100 or so turn up every year. They have a big garden so it can be hosted easily.
The day was very peaceful for me. Hubby and me both had taken leave from work and one of our friends has also come down from Mumbai, so it was a nice cozy time at home. Evening we went for the community dinner at our friend's place, where I could catch up with a lot of people. On daily basis we do not get to meet everyone, on such days it is good to gather up all under one roof.
On all festivals I like to do a Rangoli at my door step, so this time I made this one. I used a stencil cut out to make this Rangoli.
On special occasions we make some traditional sweets and this is one of them. It is cooked Vermicelli with sweetness in it. We call it Sev. It is made on all good occasions in almost every household of my culture.
In the evening we went to our friend's place there they had this table set up with all the significant things of this festival.
