Gibraltar
Gibraltar is about 2 hours’ drive from Benalmadena. I had been warned that it is just 'a piece of rock', very touristic, over-rated, and expensive. Despite that, the general consensus was that it is one of those ‘must visit’ places if you are in Spain. So, I was forewarned and I was not really disappointed to discover that all the warnings were true.
Anyhow, my friends and I had a tour along the base of the rock. Lots of shops, souvenir shops, and eateries. Very busy, very touristic and of course, very expensive.
We didn't go up to the top of the rock, or the caves, because there was a long queue for the cable cars. And I wasn’t very keen on cable car rides.
There is another way to go up to the top – by private taxi rides. However the price that we were quoted was quite outrageous. So, in the end, we just give up on the idea of going up to the top.
What’s on the top of the rock? If it is a clear day, one can look across the sea and see Morocco. And the caves are home to some monkeys. Sometimes they come out to greet their descendants.
Gibraltar has an interesting history, but as a tourist attraction, there was really not much to see. Just a big piece of rock and the base of which is lined with expensive souvenir shops and eateries, which led some to comment that it is a tourist trap. There was a museum somewhere, but I am not a big fan of museums. Maybe I am difficult to please.
Anyhow, if you are anything like me – not interested in shopping, museums, and cable cars, you can give Gibraltar a miss.
