'Magie Lark,'

This is my entry for this week's Feathered Friday challenge hosted by @melinda010100

Magpie Larks are neither magpies nor larks, therefore their name is quite misleading. Because of their black and white colours, they are often mistaken for the Australian Magpie but their bills are whitish and their irises are pale in colour.

Magpie-larks are confined to Australasia and are found throughout Australia. They are sometimes called Peewees, Peewits or Mudlarks and are found in parks, gardens, and streetscapes but enjoy bushland and farm areas too.

During the breeding season both the male and female gather wet mud and construct a bowl-shaped nest on a horizontal branch, or similar site, often up to 20 m above the ground. The bowl is lined with feathers and grasses. Fat, juicy worms, insects, capterpillars, spiders, small lizards and moths make up their diet and find most of these tasty morsels in the grass or patches of sparse or soft ground.

Here is the same image as above, after a little digital manipulation.

Adult males have white eyebrows and a black face, whereas the female has an all-white face with no white eyebrow. Young birds have black foreheads, a white eyebrow and a white throat.

Male and female Magpie Larks will often sit side by side and make calls alternately and as will both raise and lower their wings as they do so. Magpie-larks will defend their territory vigorously and this area which may spread over 10 ha area.

Both parents share the incubation duties and care for the young. If conditions are favourable, more than one brood may be reared in a year.

Thank you @pardinus I do love coming across these birds during my walks. They have quite a shrill voice and they get called peewees probably more than Magpie Larks.

What cool shots of them and that name for them is for sure so misleading

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

LOL I am always surprised at how often you find me saying I did a Haiku LOL

They talk with their hands! That would be fun to watch them having a conversation. I love the stained glass edit. You have the coolest birds!

An interesting looking bird, Trudee. You have so many lovely kinds of birds down under. Awesome digital effect- looks like stained glass.

Thanks Jo for your comments. Yes we are blessed with such a variety of birds here.

Howdy Trudee! what a striking bird! Those white eyes against the black feathers really make it unique! Great photos too of course. lol.

Thank you John. 💐
