A Gray Catbird For Feathered Friday!

in #featheredfriday5 years ago

Gray Catbirds are a slate gray songbird with a black cap, a dark tail and dark bill. They also have a rust color on the underside of the tail.

Catbirds are named for their calls which are said to resemble a cat-like mew. I don't hear it so much myself. I do hear what sounds like more of a duck call sometimes. When I was little I thought they were called Catbirds because they didn't like cats specifically and would chatter and flick their tail feathers up at them. Turns out they pretty much do that to everything...lol!🙄

Both the male and female look alike.

The female Catbird will lay one to five eggs in a brood and usually produce two broods in a season. Only the female will sit on the eggs but both the male and female Catbirds feed the babies.

I can see why the Gray Catbirds love my yard because they tend to hide in tangles and thickets along with other shrubs and trees. I've got plenty of those, especially the tangles and thickets. Our house has a barrier between a business and although it belongs to the business, they rarely keep it maintained. It's so overgrown with thickets and vines which is great for the birds (and cats) but the vines like to vigorously creep over the fence line, engulfing the trees and other shrubs in our yard.

Some people may think that the Gray Catbird is a plain looking bird but I think they are quite pretty and have a sleek look to them. I'm happy to have a couple (at least) in my yard!

Lovely photos of the cute catbird, Dee. I like the darker color on top of their head. It’s nice hearing the birds singing.
