Interruption Cards

in #family5 years ago (edited)

A while back I had my kids make “interruption cards” which they can use at any time, no matter what. Doesn’t matter if I’m on a conference call, live podcast, or interview. They are the most important thing, and this is how I communicate that.

After many months, they never redeemed them and lost them in the move to PR. Recently we created some new ones and for the first time ever, during my weekly meeting yesterday with Dapix, Aria turned one in! The CEO and CPO were gracious and the meeting ended right there. Aria wanted help building a horse barn. She tried a glue stick, then we tried a hot glue gun, then we tried a stapler. I was out of ideas until I found some rope, and we sewed the boxes together. It worked out great!

Make time for the people you love. It’s easy to get caught up working and rationalize/justify time away from them as if it’s for them. Often it’s not. Often we do it for the rush of feeling important and adding value. Your family, spouse, and your kids want your time and when all the work is done, they are what remains.

Awesome luke. An idea that in 2019, amidst constant overstimulation and deadlines, its pretty awesome to let your kids wield that sort of power in a controlled way. Teaching them the value of time, especially quality time, vs the value of the dollar ... and in such a creative and empowering way, is legitimately badass. Glad I randomly ended up reading this.

Thanks for the encouragement. It was kind of shocking moment as I was on a Zoom call and I saw my daughter open the door to my office and show the card. I asked her if she really wanted to spend it (we treat it like a currency), and she said yes. It took me a second or two to make the decision, but I did it. I briefly explained why I have to leave the meeting and they were awesome about it. Maybe interruption cards can become a new standard for work-at-home people with kids.

Very cool! and so awesome that the people on the other end of the call were so understanding!

has there ever been a situation where they weren't so understanding?

love that you made your daughter so important in that moment (and im' sure many others!!) i think she will not soon forget that memory :)

This is the first time they were ever used. I guess we'll find out in the future. Most people I choose to work with are cool though, or I wouldn't work with them.

Oh... apparently both of my comments offended @kawaiicrush.

Not sure why?

I guess she doesn't approve of your interruption cards.. or my opinion of them 😂

Ahhhh the things that upset people these days. Very funny use of time and energy hehehe

Very nice point!!! 😃

And yes I did read that was the first time! Sorry hehehehe

Your name came up on a radio show (now) and i figured I would come visit since it's been a while...

Let me know how it goes.

That is an amazing idea... we all tend to lose track of time once in a while. These cards put your focus back on what matters.

I love this idea! I am stealing it if you don't mind!
