THE DAM THAT IS EATING ITSELF
I did an article on the Kariba Dam a few months ago. I like to check what is happening as these things are quite important. If this fails, then it changes things drastically for everyone in my corner of the world. We are going to experience power outages until March next year , but if this dam fails it will wash away a power plant down river and make todays problems look minor.
When I say take it, that is an understatement. It will wash it away and plunge countries into chaos. The threat of this happening is higher than severe and every day that passes it could happen. If you read my last post you will understand the mentality as it is on Africa time and sometimes that just isn't quick enough.
In 2014 The Kariba Dam was listed as the second most dangerous dam in the world. It was bulit in 1955 and a masterpiece of engineering. Like everything in life you need to look after things with a little maintenance. What you see is hidden to what is happening underground though. Hidden issues that are more severe than you could ever imagine. It is so bad the sleuss gates can only be opened at 30 percent. The last time they were opened to maximum was in 1966.
The problem lies with the plunge pool. It is nearly 100 meters deep and when the water falls into it it swirls around eroding the foundations.The dam is in fact eating itself every day. How bad is it now as experts gave the dam three years and that was over three years ago.
The wise men in their white coats with a propganda shot in 2014 expanding the hydro electric power plant at a cost of a mere $550 million.
So much for urgency as only now are they announcing who is going to be awarded the contract to fix it. They said by the end of 2018 it would be known but I have looked and still can't find any news. The only thing that is moving fast there is the Zambezi river.
The consequences are so severe that 40 percent of South Central Africa will lose it's power supply.Millions of people will lose their lives and countless wildlife will be swept on route to the Indian Ocean taking the Cabhora Bassa dam with it lying further down river.
I just don't see the urgency and if you don't listen to the experts concerns then who are they going to listen to. I fear it may be too late as we are now in the rainy season and what foundations are left must be pretty close to being exhausted by now.

It looks like there is a possibility that the Dam is going to tip into the plunge pool as the foundations no longer have earth under them.
Another Dam required?
Hopefully a solution is found before it's too late.
I hope they are not too late. They have been sitting on this for over 4 years now and who knows how close it is to collapsing. This hasn't really been in the news as the Kariba dam is known for Tiger fishing and attracts lots of tourists. If they are worried now then it tells me it's too late.

That's terrible that is it such a HUGE tragedy waiting to happen and nothing has been started. So many people are in jeopardy, yet can do nothing about it, short of moving away from the danger zone, which I'm sure may not be an option for many.

Mosul dam is number one. Apparently the ground underneath it keeps moving and they are having to constantly fill in the gaps. Both looked screwed if you asked me.
