Today my topic is about Catatonia ( Movement disorder along with some psychiatric illness like hallucination and some case associated with Bipolar disorder).
Catatonia is a severe medical and psychiatric illness associated with movement disorder.
Main clinical features are-
-Immobility or excessive purposeless movement
-Mutism and stupor (decrease alertness and response to stimuli)
-Negativism (resistance to instructions and movement)
-Posturing (assuming position against gravity)
-Waxy flexibility ( Initial resistance then maintenance of new position)
-Echolalia and Echopraxia (mimiking speech and movement)
Treatment :
Benzodiazepine (Lorazepam) and Electro convulsive therapy.
Lorazepam challenge test about 1 to 2 mg of it will relieve the symptom within 5 to 10 minutes.
