Do we need offsides in soccer?

The best referee is one that you don't notice.

A match is at it's best when it's free flowing and end to end. It only gets more exciting if the referee stays out of the picture and lets the teams play. With this in mind how many times a match does the referee blow for offside? How many times is there an exciting piece of play that is halted due to a toe being over the line?

We now have VAR in most cases but before that how many goals should or should not have been given for offside over the years. How many controversies have been caused by this rule and I know that we have all felt the pain of a goal being ruled out or given to decide a match.

I hate hearing the whistle blow and if I had my way would almost get rid of the referee entirely and watch the fun begin. That might be a step too far however as they would probably kill each other to win.

Remove offside from the equation.

My opinion might be a bit controversial but why do we need to have offside in the first place? I am all in favor of speeding up and simplifying processes and would like to see the rule taken out entirely. Let the defense mark the opposition man to man and play from wherever you stand. It would change the flow of a match and introduce a new set of decisions.

Where to stand, how to mark, where to set up as an attacker, as a defender. Long balls become more acceptable or do you camp on the center circle..... A new set of choices but a lot less controversies and a faster game. Something i would like to see in operation and trialed to improve the game.

What is your opinion on it?

I do think all the rules and interpretation as made the game a bit stop start and takes away a lot of the intensity

I do still see the value in the off side rule as it adds a dynamic for the worlds best to test themselves against! These guys are the best at what they do and train each day to time runs, bend runs and signal one another

Having the off side rule encourages them to perfect their craft and is one of the things that separates a decent striker from a world class one

That's fair enough, I suppose. Being in the right place at the right time is a skill in itself especially with the offside rule. Otherwise it would be like 5 a side and wait in the square.

Interesting idea, but I think it would actually remove the flow of the game as the match would be reduced to kick and run.
What I would like to see however is a little more common sense applied, especially to people slightly in an offside position but not affecting play. This has already supposed to have been implemented but as usual, there seems to be no consistency in its application.
Of course, it could be said that some teams only play kick and run anyway so for them there would probably be very little difference!

It would change the dynamic of how the game is played. Less emphasis on passing and more on getting it into the box. You wouldn't need to unlock a defense as you could by pass it. It would be a different game alright.

To be fair a lot less whistling and some consistency across matched would go a long way to improving the game and making it more watchable. That and referees not taking shit from the players anymore. Simple things that would improve the game immensely.

I am in favor of offside!
This is an tactical weapon which can be used by the lesser team of the two. When executed to perfection it is great to see!
Also it gives lots of discussions at the bar! 😁

Plenty to talk about!!!

The good thing about sport is that there always is a talking point. From individual brilliance to dodgy decisions. I't's why we get so involved with the matches.

hahaha i will come back to read. Funny how i used to think of this when i was younger and for many sports. Feels most sports have some of this. Offside, it used to seem like one of those un-needed rules but i see why it exists. One thing that will help one understand why it is needed better is know what an offside it. Many still miscalculate it. It is a bit comparable to my feelings about 'travelling' in basketball and sometimes wondering how James Harden in travel with his multiple stepbacks

I think that consistency is a huge part with any of these rules. I played basketball in school and college and travelling was one of the rules that had different applications with different refs. It can be frustrating that a player can do steps and jumps in one game which another ref might call.

I tend to get very frustrated with the technical fouls as they feel unnecessary even though they are part of the game. I only see a foul when a player get taken out of the game and everything else is play on.... but the rules are there and they make the games what they are.
