Monemvasia,Greece

in #esteem6 years ago (edited)
  • In Greek mythology this is where Orpheus walked searching for his dead lover, Eurydice; it is where Herakles captured Cerberus, the fearsome beast with three dog heads, snake heads protruding from its back and a serpent for a tail that guarded the entrance to the gates of hell and where Odysseus consulted with the the dead."*

Monemvasia is an island cut off from the Peloponnese mainland by an earthquake in 375 AD and now accessed by a short causeway. Cars are left at the entrance to this ancient town.

One of the first things I did when arriving in this beautiful town was to fall down a flight of stairs. I spent the first day of my visit with ice packs on my knees. It wasn't until the next year that all of my clumsy episodes were explained when I was diagnosed with MS.

I had a lovely place to stay and recover from my fall.

These giant steps to get up to the bedroom were a little daunting, though!

The story is very beautiful, and feels sad in the heart.

The Greek Myths are intense.

We will definitely visit him, and seek experience about Greek history.

My dear Melinda I enjoy these beautiful pictures of this ancient city so much. Surely it was not unfortunate to fall but you had a beautiful place to recover. Those steps were really high

I'm so glad you enjoyed this. It is such a beautiful place! This was back in the days of film cameras so I didn't take nearly enough photos!

I think that was the only bad thing, but I know you enjoyed this trip a lot and that's the most important thing

It was an amazing trip. One of those trips of a lifetime!

Is that just by seeing the pictures I imagine, when traveling we gain life

That is so true. And you learn more than you even thought possible!

Traveling allows us to know other cultures and that's great.🌎

That looks like anther lovely place to visit on the Greek mainland @melinda010100.

Those steps must indeed have been scary, having had one fall already.

I will post more from there, but you should definitely plan a holiday that includes the mainland! I don't enjoy tourist destinations and prefer to explore off the beaten track. Being close to Athens, this was a one of the most touristy places we visited

Me too @melinda010100 and mainland Greece is definitely on the list. 😊

Wow beautiful island

cars are left at the entrance to this ancient town

Thats enough to make worth visit right there. I see you tossed in a b&w :) We comment often but thats different than real conversation I did not know about MS. I don't have first hand experience with MS so don't know what you are going through but seems you are managing well and live a very active lifestyle.

It was a beautiful place to visit! My world got much more narrow after Jim died last year, but I'm adjusting and learning to enjoy my quieter days.

I'm happy for you "enjoying your quieter days" @melinda010100 I enjoy your posts and comments, friend :)

There are never any lonely days because of you and everyone here!

Exquisite. When can I get there.

Greece is worth a visit!

It look ancient but still beautiful. That's just a short story that should be known

I'm really sorry to hear about your problems and accident.
These places are amazing, great photos my dear friend! Greece must be wonderful, maybe I'll have the chance to visit. I love rustic by the way!

Thanks and again, these are old film photos that I have tried to make useable. Greece is fascinating. I would go back in a heartbeat if I could.

Wow. I wish I could visit Greece someday!

There is so much there to see. It is one place that I would've loved to of gone back to. Hope you do get to go! I didn't get to travel until my kids were grown.

I thoroughly enjoyed viewing these amazing photos @melinda010100 I was sad to hear that amongst your happy memories, part of your visit was tinged with negativity when you discovered you had MS.
I'm glad you recovered quickly and appear to lead a full and interesting life despite the challenges of your condition. Thank you for sharing your trip to Greece with us my friend.
