Thai Photography Contest: market in Chinatown Bangkok, ตลาดไชน่าเทาวน์ที่เยาวราชกรุงเทพฯ

Two weeks ago I went to Chinatown in Yaowarad road in Bangkok to get a few Chinese hanging calendars. These are special calendar with lots of information about the phases of the moon and Buddhist holy days.

I know several shortcuts and small alleys where the old Chinese market has been in existence for over a hundred years. The old houses and shop houses along this market alley are still there without being renovated. But I am afraid that one day the whole area will become a big development project and all these old Chinese vendors would have to move out. Condominiums and new shopping centers will replace these old two-storey buildings.

In this market, we could find fresh vegetables and meat, ready cooked food, dried food and fruits, cooking utensils and all kinds of Chinese herbs including special red papers used in Chinese ceremonies. I would normally walk straight to the dim sum stalls, tea shop and noodle shops at the end of the alley. These are very well known shops with long queues of customers during lunchtime.

เมื่อสองสัปดาห์ก่อนเราได้ไปแถวถนนเยาวราชถิ่นคนจีน เพื่อไปหาซื้อปฏิทินจีนที่มีรายละเอียดมากและมีตัวหนังสือใหญ่มากทำให้เห็นได้ถนัด เราก็เดินลัดเลาะตามทางลัดและถนนเส้นใน เพื่อเลี่ยงการจราจร ตลาดเก่าแก่แห่งนี้มีอายุมากกว่าร้อยปี ตึกแถวและร้านเหล่านี้สร้างในสมัยรัชกาลที่5 เราดีใจที่ยังไม่มีการรื้อถอนหรือเปลี่ยนแปลงให้ทันสมัย แต่ในอนาคตเราคิดว่าสถานที่นี้คงจะกลายเป็นคอนโดหรูและห้างสรรพสินค้าขนาดใหญ่ที่ทันสมัย และคนจีนที่อาศัยทำกินมาสามสี่ชั่วอายุคนก็คงต้องย้ายออกไปที่อื่น

ที่ตลาดนึ้มีอาหารสด อาหารแห้งทุกอย่างที่ใช้ในการทำอาหารจีน มีผลไม้แห้งผักสด และสมุนไพรจีน แต่เราชอบเดินไปเกือบสุดซอย ตรงที่มีร้านติมซำ ร้านนํ้าชาและร้านขายบะหมี่ ตอนกลางวันจะมีลูกค้าเข้าคิวยาวมาก อาหารและขนมของคนจีนแถวนี้อร่อยมาก เรามักจะซื้อขนมจีบและซาลาเปากลับบ้าน แต่เรามักจะไปถึงตอนเขาขายหมดแล้วเป็นประจำ ถ้าเดินทะลุซอยนี้ไป เราก็จะเห็นวัดมังกรฯ อยู่ฝั่งตรงข้ามของถนน ถนนเจริญกรุงกำลังมีการเปลี่ยนแปลง มีสถานีรถไฟฟ้าใต้ดิน และมีคอนโดหรูกำลังสร้างเกือบเสร็จ เราควรไปเดินเล่นที่นี่กันเพื่อหวนระลึกถึงชีวิต ของคนจีนที่มาตั้งรกรากในไทยที่ย่านถนนเยาวราชในสมัยรัชกาลที่5 ในอนาคตตลาดนี้คงกลายเป็นตลาดติดแอร์ที่มีหุ่นยนต์เป็นผู้จัดการ
