This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the kind and compassionate @dswigle. Having Steemit friends here presents a very good opportunity for me to visit places which are quite a long way outside central Bangkok. This time we would be on the skytrain for about forty minutes to reach our destination. The first destination on that day was the Erawan Museum (the Three-headed Elephant Museum).

The morning breakfast was very light and simple. We took the hotel free electric car service to the skytrain station, Sala Daeng. I was quite impressed by my friends’ ability to use the temperamental ticket vending machines at the underground and skytrain stations. I was glad that the journey was not very demanding. We could sit in cool train quietly for over half an hour. We had to get the local bus to get to the museum which seemed like two kilometer away.

@gamer00 and @daabi2006 having a cooling time!

I did not tell my friends where our tour would be; I just told them we were going to a museum! So, when they saw where we were heading from the train station; they whipped out their cameras and long lens.

These two were fighting over the zoom lens!! Amazing photographers! So dedicated!

The Erawan Museum: the Three-Headed Elephant Sculpture is the largest hand-made sculpture in Thailand; it is 436 meters in height, weighing 150 tons. The elephant was lined with copper of 1.2 mm thick in sizes ranging from 4•8 feet to the size of one’s hand. Hundreds of thousands of copper sheets were slowly plated with dedicated craftsmanship. The construction started in 1994 and opened to the public in 2003.

My iPhone was not good at zooming, so let’s borrow one nice official photo.

What impressed my was the intention of the deceased owner of this museum, Khun Lek Viruyaphant who constructed the whole place with his money. He wanted to preserve the foundation of Eastern civilisation through arts and artistic expressions of major religions or belief systems. He was afraid that the degeneration of society through time would destroy all these precious cultural inheritance.

Erawan means water, clouds and rainbows; it is also the name of a white elephant with 33 heads. He is the vehicle of Indra, the highest Hindu god. There are more detailed entourages of each head which would seemed possible only in imagination.

The building is divided into three sections: the underworld, Earth and Heaven. The ground floor represents earth with four big pillars support the stained glass ceiling. The walls and statues were covered with tiny pieces of porcelains, ceramic spoons and lids of antique bowls. The art work reflected hours of patient and painstaking craftsmanship.

The upper floor, the Cosmos, is inside the belly of the elephant which could be reached by many winding steps to the foyer for catching up with our breath! There’s a glass panel for a bird-eye view of the museum ground.

The top floor or the Heaven gave out very peaceful energy as the small room is full of ancient sand stone Buddha statues and old bronze Buddha of almost a thousand years old. There were sacred Buddha relics hidden behind the partition. I hope to go back there again to spend a whole day there with a picnic basket.

The museum ground is very well designed with various Hindu shrines dotted around the garden. Chinese tourists could be heard wherever we wandered; they were very well equipped for glamorous photography and selfies. I found the garden very calming and pleasant. We quite liked those auspicious elephants which a recorded elephant sound could be heard when people walked under the belly! That was good fun!

Beautiful sculptures and statues.. Two headed elephant is cool... :-)

Glad you enjoy these photos! Actually, the elephant has three heads but my photo was too dark!

It’s worth going back to this museum again one day!
