#wednesdaywalk: The Brooklyn Bridge

in #esteem7 years ago

This is a submission for the #wednesdaywalk challenge hosted by @tattoodjay.

So, I've got this USB drive that has been plugged into my computer for several months now. It has a bunch of data I pulled from my old Mac Mini before I decommissioned it and destroyed the hard drive. It has all of my pictures from the couple of trips I took to New York as well as some other stuff on it.

I knew I wanted to post in this challenge today, but when I woke up we were about two inches deep in snow and it is supposed to continue through the day. I think they are calling for seven inches total by the time we are finished. In light of that, I decided to dig into my stash again and pull out these pictures from a pleasant stroll that was taken across the Brooklyn Bridge many years ago.

We started along the waterfront to the South of the bridge and we were walking along admiring the old brownstone buildings that I think make up one of the wealthier areas of Brooklyn. I believe it would be the Brooklyn Heights area as I go back and look at Google Maps.

Even from a distance the bridge is pretty impressive. It definitely has that iconic style allowing people to recognize it now matter where they are from.

I really like this shot I got of one of the towers to the bridge and the Empire State Building in the background.

As focused as we were on the bridge, there is definitely something about the Manhattan skyline that makes you need to stop and just take it in for a second. I actually remember my frist trip to New York, we took a cab from Laguardia to Brooklyn where we were staying. From there after we got settled in our host took us via Subway into Manhattan. The feeling when I first came out of the subway into the center of New York was something I will never forget. It was like I was in a movie.

Here is a blurry picture of the Staten Island Ferry for you. Apparently I hadn't figured out the difference between digital zoom and optical zoom on my camera at that point :P

The first time I visited New York was a little bit after 9/11. We had already walked down to the site of where the towers had stood, but I also wanted to get this picture from a distance. I am pretty sure the building with the green pyramid top is one of the smaller buildings in the trade center complex that the towers were a part of.

Eventually, we finally got up onto the Brooklyn Bridge and started walking across it. Then of course me being the dork I am, what do I do but take a picture of a different bridge. I'd have to look at the map to get the name of it, but this should be the next bridge North from the Brooklyn Bridge.

I've never participated in the #lookingup challenge, but this might be a good candidate. I grabbed this shot as we were passing by one of the towers.

I also got another hazy shot of the Statue of Liberty...

This is a better shot of the buildings that remained after 9/11.

In addition to the #lookingup challenge, maybe there is a #lookingdown challenge. Walking across the bridge is definitely not something you want to do if you suffer from a fear of heights or have issues being able to see the water far below you!

Heck, I am on fire today because this could potentially be a good candidate for @melinda010100's shadow contest. Unless of course it needs to be my own shadow, in that case nevermind.

As we were getting closer to Manhattan I grabbed this nice shot of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building.

This probably would have been a much better shot if I hadn't been leaning like a drunk sailor and I didn't have the Verizon building in the background!

We eventually made it to the other side though and continued our adventures for he day in Manhattan. I am actually getting pretty close to being out of pictures from New York. I think I have some shots of Central Park that I might share in the future though.

Thanks for taking this walk with me!

I do love the Brooklyn Bridge and area so always cool to see it in posts and especially for the walk Challenge, The bridge you can see from the Brooklyn Bridge is the Manhattan Bridge :)

I knew I could count on you to set me straight about the other bridge :) Thanks for the kind words!

Its bene quite a while since i walked the Brooklyn Bridge so I enjoyed doing it again through your shots,
Having walked over mos tof the city areas many times I should know all the bridges well by now LOL

Its been years since i was there, before 9/11 in fact. The one I remember is the Verrazzano, now thats some bridge.

Yes, it is a very cool bridge in its own right!

Giant cities... I've never really had the experience of living in one! They look like something out of a futuristic movie to me. I just don't have the concept of them.... but thanks for sharing photos of things that I only hear about in the news or films!

I wouldn't want to live in one but visiting them is pretty cool!

Howdy there bozz! Those are some really interesting pictures there and that one shot looking up at the bridge would have been a killer like you said but it was still a good shot. Well done!

Thank you! I appreciate it!
