Music: Six from the Sixties Challenge

in #esteem6 years ago

About a week ago, @slobberchops made this post about his daughter @dismayedworld not liking most of the music that is out today.

This led to him issuing the Six from the Sixties Challenge to bring to light some popular songs from that time that his daughter (and others of the younger generation) should maybe checkout.

Here are the rules of the challenge (copied from his original post):

The Rules

  • Link SIX singles from the 1960’s and let us know why the song is memorable to you.

  • Make sure they are not too obscure, we are trying to teach the younger readers what was good, not about old ‘B-sides’.

  • State the year of release, we are trying to educate people!

  • Add a Wikipedia link to each song so the uneducated can learn a little about the song. If there isn’t one available, then choose something a little more popular.

  • Use the # sixtieschallenge tag in your article.

So, without further ado, here we go:

Etta James - I'd Rather Go Blind

When most people hear the name Etta James, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the song "At Last". While this is an awesome song, I think that one of her other hits, "I'd Rather Go Blind" is just as powerful.

It was released in 1968 and for me it is just a raw gut wrenching song about pain and loss and not wanting to move on. This is the kind of song I can see myself sitting in the dark listening to very loudly while sipping on some bourbon.

The Beach Boys - God Only Knows

If you haven't been blessed to hear about the Beach Boys, then you are truly missing out. I grew up listening to these fellas on the oldies station that my dad had our radios bascially glued to.

While you might think all of their songs are about surfing and partying on the beach, this song, released in 1966, is just a great basic love song. It has been covered many times and there was recently a BBC version of it with many artists expressing their love of music through this song.

It will always stand out as one of my favorites of theirs.

The Beatles - In My Life

I'd be crazy if I didn't have a song on here from the Beatles. Rubber Soul and Revolver are probably two of my most favorite albums of theirs. This song released in 1965 from the former album is probably one of my favorites.

There is something every emotional and touching about it. I feel like it has a lot of meat to it and while many of The Beatles slower songs tend to beat around the bush and not come straight out to say what they are about, this one is quite the opposite.

Neil Diamond - Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show

Another artist I would be remiss if I didn't mention is Neil Diamond. Personally, I feel he is one of the greatest song writers that have ever existed. I totally dig his voice and the variety of tunes that he can put out there. For example, did you know that "I'm a Believer" by the Monkee's was written by him? How about "Red Red Wine" by UB40?

This song was released in 1969 and if I had to pick just a handful of Neil Diamond favorites, it would be one of them. It is just a fun song about a travelling preacher.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Green River

"Green River" released by Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) in 1969 is a great example of why I like this band. If you haven't seen a theme in the last two songs, I like singers that have unique voices. That is probably part of the reason Counting Crows is one of my all time favorite bands.

John Fogerty is a fantastic singer and a master at using his voice to take you into the song. This song really makes me think of the time when I was a kid and we went down to Oklahoma to visit the family of a guy my dad was in the Navy with. As kids, we spent most of our days at the creek fishing for catfish and trying not to get bit by giant snapping turtles.

Roger Miller - King of the Road

If I did karoke, this would be my song, hands down, no question.
This song (released in 1965) paints an awesome picture of the days you could travel from one end of the country to the other just by hopping on a freight train.

It has a cool rhythm and a nice flow to the lyrics. There is just something easy going about it that I love.

Wow @bozz , that's a nice list. Some great songs, funny fact: a friend of mine ( Han Nijenhuis ) played (drums) in the Etta James Experience. They played a lot.of shows here in Holland.

That is awesome! I bet it was a great thing to watch :) Thanks for the comment!

It was indeed.
Here a video of a gig, quite long but you can get a impression:

Very Cool!

Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!

You can see your post's place along the track here: The Daily Whistle Stops, Issue 264 (9/22/18)

Thank you!

I remember searching out some of these on vinyl when I was much younger. I managed to get a 45' of God only Knows, but it was a bit scratched. Some others I got were in better condition.

Very cool. I have one full album of the beach boys but I don't remember which one it is. I will have to dig back in my crates to see.

Excellent selection, and there are two I've never heard before. At least I don't think I've heard the Neil Diamond one - unfortunately I was unable to play it - a message came up saying it could only be played on YouTube, and as I'm rushing off for the weekend I'll have to give that a miss for now.
I LOVE the Beachboys choice, and I thought about including it in my selection, but I wasn't sure if it was from the 60s. I think they were ahead of their time.
I think people who weren't born in the Sixties will love these.

Thank you! This was a very thoughtful comment and I love the feed back! That is a bummer you couldn't play the Neil Diamond song, it is a great one!

I've listened to it now on YouTube, and it's one I've never heard before. He's an amazing performer!

He is pretty awesome. I got to see him live a couple of years ago and it was phenomenal!

He's not young either. Impressive!

thats a real nice list all songs I love

I am glad you enjoyed them!

I surely did I listen tot he 60s stations often when walking around

Some really great songs you've picked out. Love me some Creedence Clearwater Revival :D

Thanks I dig them too. Just got their greatest hits on vinyl a short time ago. I think it is a reissue, but still...

Home RUN. What a terrific list! Even I would't have thought of Etta James (unless it was a blues list :))

And finish it up with Roger Miller. Holy Cow!

Thanks man! Made me smile!

Awesome! Gald I could make your day. I enjoy all kinds of music so I wantes to make sure several genres were represented. For my country pick of I hadn't thought of Roger Miller it would have been Johnny Cash or Willy Nelson for sure. Keeping with the theme of unique voices... The sad thing is I didn't even make it to Motown...

@bozz could you give a tip - what helpie mean?

@helpie is an invite only group of Steemians that work together to help each other become successful. Check out their blog.

Nice selection!
My music tastes tend to run a little later, 70's and 80's, but I dearly love CCR, especially 'Have you ever Seen the Rain?' ♥

It was hard because a lot of the ones I wanted to pick carried over into the 70s!

really cool man...Etta James .
