Watching Our Favorite Shows On TV Isn't That Popular Anymore

According to a new report from Accenture, watching television on the TV is less popular than ever before.

It's estimated that only 25 percent of Americans are watching their favorite programs on a traditional TV, compared to about 59 percent from only a year ago. That drop in interest is thanks to a growing number who are instead turning to their computers and cellphones in order to consume the content they want.

When it comes to watching television around the world, it's estimated by the same report that less than a quarter of all television viewers are using a regular TV in order to watch their shows. This shows the dramatic increase in popularity for alternative viewing methods like using smartphones, tablets, and more.

Now that we are getting content in other places, does that mean we are spending less time consuming content than before? Not really. It's estimated that we spend somewhere between 8 to 18 hours a day consuming content online. The average is said to be somewhere around 11 hours.

And of course we don't need to be sitting on a couch either in order to do it, we can be on the bus, in class, and a myriad of other different places.

It isn't really surprising that less people would be watching their favorite content on a regular television, seeing as watching it online often gives the viewer more control over what they want to see. But for those who conducted the study, they say that they were very surprised by the results.

The same report also showed that at least 31 percent of respondents said that they preferred to use their laptop or desktop in order to watch their favorite show. This is an increase of about 10 percent from a year earlier where around 22 percent said they preferred a laptop or desktop.

When it came to the old way of watching our favorite shows on television, most people had to schedule their life around being home at the right time in order to see that show. But now they can choose when they want to watch it at a time that is convenient for them, thanks to the abundance of television shows that have provided their content for viewers to watch online. Because of the convenience and flexibility this option offers, it is no wonder that more viewers are opting for it.

A number of consumers are also said to be ditching their traditional cable subscriptions and instead opting for just receiving their news, weather, and other preferred content online. Last year alone, traditional pay TV services say that they lost millions of customers and they expect many more to continue ending their subscriptions.
