Where do your up-votes go? / Which 'class' of user receives your votes?

in #engagement6 years ago

And this week, the gift comes in the shape of a pie... chart. Which class of user do you support, 2018.

image.png

I understand that you might be expecting a list, but I thought that if I presented your data in a pie chart, and your data looked like something you could back up, you could then use the chart in a post?

People use varying voting strategies. Perhaps you like to vote on Orcas content, in the hope that they may pay you a visit or give a nice boost to your engaging comment. Maybe you like to support your own 'class', and have tendency to support those around you in the hope they will grow with you. Or maybe you just don't care less who you are voting for, as long as the content is interesting.

The categories are organised as follows:

ClassSteem Power
Redfish or Smaller< 500
Minnow> 499 & < 5000
Dolphin> 4999 & < 50000
Orca> 49999 & < 500000
Whale> 499999

Your pie chart will look something like this:

image.png

  • The data is taken from 1st January 2018 to present
  • The percentage represents the total votes for each 'class' - not unique accounts supported
  • If the account was a Minnow when you voted for the content in January but is now a Dolphin, this vote will be grouped into the Dolphin 'class'
  • Vote weight is not taken into consideration
  • Only up-votes are included

As far as my data goes, I'm reasonably happy with regards to the classes my votes land on. Almost 2/3rds of my votes go to accounts with less than 500 SP. Almost a 1/3rd of my votes go to accounts in my own class - Dolphin.

A very small % of my votes go to Whales - however, there are only 35 of these accounts, and most do not produce content.

As of about half an hour ago, this is the state of play with regards to account classes:

ClassTotalPercentage
Redfish or smaller110659199.068%
Minnow83720.750%
Dolphin17220.154%
Orca2820.025%
Whale350.003%

So, should my chart actually show that the vast majority of my votes are going out to 'Redfish or smaller'?

I'd be interested to know how the chart looks for others. Are you a same 'class' supporter? Are you an Orca/Whale hunter? Or do you devote your energy and votes towards the little fish?

Who wants a pie chart?

Cheers!

Asher

That's really interesting. I'd love to see how my votes stack out. I imagine that a lot of mine go to minnows as most of the class I started with are now 500SP+.

Looks like you know what type of pie you like the most :)

Is it possible to see where the people were at when I voted for them? Or is that too much coding. I know it's probably much simpler to just see who I voted for and where they are now. That being said, I don't know how to do any of it, so please don't take it as me complaining. ;)

I'd say that's a pretty decent distribution there, @themanwithnoname, with a decent percentage going to dolphins, too. What do you think? Were you expecting a higher or lower ratio among these upvotes, or did it pretty much come out the way you thought it would?

I thought I would have had more going to Red Fish, but because a lot of us have moved up to Minnow, I have a large percentage there. I didn't expect as high of a percentage would be in Dolphin land. I guess that's good that I'm networking. I just wasn't sure where I stood.

I'd say you're doing really well as far as all this goes, considering the time you have and so forth. That's really the key. How much time do you have to give to this and what do you do with the time when you're here. I'd say you're using your time quite well. Is there room for improvement. Well, of course, but who knows what that's going to require, and it might not come without more time and exposure.

Now, Asher has another graph out for who's been upvoting us. I'll be interested to see how that falls out, and just how much curie influences it. :)

I try to spend it well. I haven't been on as much recently as I had been in the past. I can't seem to get the motivation to put off other things in order to Steem. I guess that's good that I'm making progress elsewhere. :)

I'll have to check out Asher's new post.

Well, I hope you never get the motivation to put off other things in order to STEEM. :) Of course, I'd love for you to be here as much as you can, but life is supposed to take precedence. I'm in the middle of trying to help my wife recuperate from her hernia surgery, so I'm bouncing back and forth between my office and the house. Fortunately, our son and his wife are here so they can kind of help out too, but I don't want to be motivated to help her over STEEM. I just want to help her. :)

That's nice that you're helping her. And it's good that she's your top priority. Steem is a fun place to spend time sometimes, but there's other stuff that needs to get done too. Maybe when the price of Steem goes back up we can all just focus on our Steem jobs. ;)

Well I am a big fan of your analytical work Asher, and also quite a fan of pie, so it seems only natural that I would like to see my vote distribution. Thanks in advance.

Sure thing, thank for supporting these random data gatherings.

95% going to Minnows or smaller, feed the small fishes :D

I have always loved pie whether they be actual or pie charts. I'll have a chart please, Asher!

:D I was waiting for the first comment like this! Here's a pie for you.....

Lots of support for the Minnows and smaller, over 3/4 of your votes go to accounts that at present can give you a max vote of around 35-40 cents (approx vote size for a 4999 SP Minnow)

Thanks, Asher. Obviously, I don't know too many whales! 🤔 I guess I need to dig deeper...

Hey, @ceciastor.

Your chart and mine turned out fairly similar, except you've managed to find a few more dolphins and orcas to vote for. :) As Asher said, there's not a whole lot of whales who upvote, and in reality, not a whole lot of the orcas are either. You get that high in SP, it seems like most don't do as much posting or commenting, so less opportunities to upvote their material. Then, they turn around and delegate SP, leaving curation largely to those they delegate to.

In other words, I think you've got a pretty good spread of uvpotes going. :)

I think so too! LOL Whales don't do much posting, commenting or upvoting period.

Well, as I was telling someone else, most whales belong to Steemit in some form or another, or they are Steemit execs, or they're devs who got most of their compensation through the distribution. So, most of those accounts aren't meant to do much with in the way of the posting, commenting and curating, which depending on who you listen to, is the way it should be. We want the SP there to draw from, we just don't need the big guns to move it a whole lot. I've heard arguments to the contrary, so who knows. I just know outside of a whale who follows the curie trail, I'm not going to see too many of them, and only a few more orcas.

I really like this one. Hit me!

Will do!

Almost identical to @cecicastor, plenty of support for the little fish here :)

Based on all the charts I've seen so far all those whales must be starving to death! At least the minnows like to come out and play. They are fun to swim with anyways! Not to much of a care in the ocean.

THe longer I have been on here the more I support those in a similar sitaution to me - I know how hard it is for smaller accounts and think they appreciate my small upvote more than the whales and dolphins.

I know how hard it is for smaller accounts and think they appreciate my small upvote more than the whales and dolphins.

This is true, let's see.....

Yep, you certainly seem to focus on the smallest fishes!

Can I have mine too? If you find a moment :) Thanks a lot Asher!

Sure! :)

I like this one - even and majority support for Redfish or smaller and Minnows, with a little towards the Dolphins, cool!

Wow! That really looks cool! Thank you Asher!

My upvotes go to the people who I regularly interact with. I'm a big upvoter of comments. I like to monetize my interactions because why the hell not. Even if I disagree with someone I upvote their replies and keep upvoting if they keep upvoting mine. I follow a few users who have an order of magnitude or two more of SP than I have. I try to drop quality comments to receive a few good upvotes. I follow many blogs that I find interesting whose owners have an order of magnitude or two less SP than I. I upvote their posts regularly. Most of the blogs I follow belong to minnows like myself. Those who I support are a mix of interesting content producers and people who have demonstrated an interest in growing their accounts. I like tending my garden, a mutual support society of growth-minded individuals.

I'm also a big up-voter of comments - although these will need to wait until tomorrow or I risk hitting the dreaded 70's :)

Plenty of info there with regards to voting style, I'd like to think most adopt your style in the main. Let's see how that looks in the shape of a pie:

Thanks for sharing your approach.

Thanks for the chart. Interesting stuff.

I'd be interested to know how the chart looks for others.

So how can I get the data?

Like that :)

78% of your votes this year to Minnow or smaller, nice!

Is the chart big enough? Looks a bit small? :(

Wow, thanks. The chart size is fine. Just switched to steempeak and it is displayed all right. Anyway, the usual trick is opening an image in a new tab to have it in full size. The chart looks almost symmetric and well distributed, I guess that's a good sign.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Yes I would say you are supporting the accounts around your size and lower, nice to see!

Most of your upvotes go to Steemonians that comment your posts. That's at least what I think. So that means most of your followers are red fish or minnows.

Please show me my data!
Btw again a very awesome pie!
And I won't even get fat from it 😀😁

Yes you are correct with regards to my voting habits :) Calorie free pie coming up:

84% out to the Minnows or smaller, pretty cool :)

I try to mostly upvote red fish and minnows. As I think those are the ones that earn far less than orcas and whales. So only dolphins, orcas or whales that post really great content het my upvote.

In the end it's all kind of a gesture thing as my upvote only has very little value.

Let's see if that is the case...

A few votes for the larger accounts but mostly supporting the little guys :)

Did you know you presented my data double?

To confuse me a bit you changed the colors. But that didn't work to fool around with me 😬😁

Hey don't underestimate the power of a gesture. Those little pennies do add up. Especially so for the redfish accounts.

But if you don't get any pay out then it won't add up. 0+0 will always be zero.

That is why my @dustsweeper stays up to date. I always get my pay out. Then I just have to be aware of were I put my own votes. Always either know my friend has dustsweeper or go to vote on one of their post so It will add on and not be wasted.

Dustsweeper is quite nice. But only very few people use it. So that's not really a big solution for the mass.

Good point. It is my work around for the moment though. And becoming more vital every day.

Dustsweeper is quite nice. But only very few people use it. So that's not really a big solution for the mass.

Yes, please! I would like to know this one. The data might be skewed since I have a couple dolphins (like yourself) who are some of my favorite authors. Would be interested to see though.

Aww, thanks! I don't think anyone's chart is particularly 'skewed' - there's no right or wrong here, unless perhaps one class has a major bias (and it's the one you reside in)

Looks very well distributed to me!

Thanks Asher!

Hey, @beeyou.

Your percentage splits are closer to what I was thinking mine would be, but yours is much better when it come to dolphin upvoting. I think it shows a pretty healthy look for the present and the future. Nothing wrong with upvoting dolphins that you like to read. :)
