Intelligence has always been a symbol of prestige and success, considered almost as important as a bulky wallet, although it is known that how far you can go in life does not depend on your IQ level. The truth is that geniuses attract a lot of attention. Great inventors, philosophers, artists, physicists and mathematicians fill a list of personalities that earned their rightful place in history by their works, inventions and amazing discoveries. Among all of them there is someone who is considered the most intelligent man that never existed, and although at the time he was not tested for his IQ to prove it, he is known for his achievements which is, according to the official historical record the brightest person who ever lived and given the things that this character did in life it is difficult for someone to overcome him soon. Such an individual is born every many generations, I present to you: William James Sidis.

Son of Russian immigrants, James was born on april 1st 1898, New York, United States of America. His parents were smart people and they strictly educated their children. His mother read them Greek mythology before bed time. In the cradle instead of stuffed animals their dad put cubes with letters of the alphabet. But of all their children, William was the most prestigeous. At the age of 1 year and 6 months the baby was able to read the New York Times and had fluent conversations with adults. At age 3 his parents were surprised when they found him using the type writer. He had dragged a chair and piled several books to get on the desk, they caught him writing a letter that indicated all the toys he wanted. At age 4 he had already read books like the Iliad and Homer's Odyssey, in their original language.

The achievements of this person were such that some belive it as a paranormal topic, but that is incorrect because this man really existed and actually did the things you are going to read. He showed early interest in languages, at age 6 William was able to speak 9 languages fluently, his mother tongue (English) and 8 others, but not just any languages, William spoke Latin, Greek, Russian, Ebreo, Turkish, Armenian, French and German. As a child, motivated by his achievements, he created his own language, as rich and accurate as any other. He called it Vendergood and wrote a book about it.

Writing this does not do justice to the true brain power of Sidis, perhaps the funniest anecdote about him is that one morning, as an adult he went to the library and asked for several books of the Portuguese language. When they asked him what he was doing there, James said he was interested in learning a new language, then they left him alone to study. James spent the whole day reading without recess, by the time sunset came he finally stopped. The next day the man presented a test to check the fruit of his studies on which he got a perfect grade. Although the accent was not accurate the man officially knew how to speak Portuguese, long story short William James Sidis learned one language in one evening.

This was just his starting point, the most incredible fact about this person and what separates him from others is that he was not a genius in a single trade, William was excellent in everything he set out to do. At 6 he created a mathematical algorithm to help him calculate what day of the week any historical event in humanity had happened. As a child he also corrected a postulate of Edward Vermilye Huntington, one of the most important mathematicians in the world at the time. At age 11 William James Sidis already had a master's degree in mathematics and mathematical studies.

And there is much more, at age 5 he had already written 4 books, 2 of human anatomy and 2 of astronomy, at age 6 and only as a recreational hobby he passed an admission test of the medical school of Harvard, at age 7 he passed an MIT admission test. However Sidis showed no interest in any of the careers, he only played by passing entrance exams. But at age 9 he got serious, he was already at Harvard and had finished a career as a linguist, graduating with highest of honors. At age 16 he entered the lawyer school at the same university, graduating as a lawyer and again with highest of honors. All of this while he was still learning many other languages. As an adult James William Sidis fluently spoke 40 languages.

Unfortunately not everything is perfect, William developed a very reclusive personality, he never got married, he was not interested in having contact with other people, almost didnt have any friends. He preferred to be alone, without being disturbed. He was a teacher of Trigonometry and eucledian geometry. He was also a young socialist, which got him in trouble. As an adult he was a fervent libertarian, unfortunately at that time it was dangerous as well to be one in the United States. Ironically it was thanks to libertarian policies that the country would reach its status as an economic superpower in the 1950s.

James wanted to have a private life, which led him to publish a multitude of books with pseudonyms since he did not like the attention that it gave. Even so, this conflictive genius who was born too early for his time graduated with honors in 7 different careers, and all of them in universities of excellent reputation. He died 46 years old after a stroke on July 17, 1944, in Massachusetts, United States.(edited)

Experts from around the world and most reputable societies like MENSA International estimate that the IQ of James William Sidis should have been between 250-300. Comparing it with someone of prestigeous reputation, Albert Einstein had an IQ of approximately 180. Undoubtedly and by far the most intelligent human being who has walked on earth, but at the same time a curious lesson about life and the social aspects of it.

I have never heard of him, thank you for sharing! Sounds quite amazing. Is there any footage of this man lying around? Hmm was quite awhile ago.

Maybe bring that smart you don't want to be with us dummies :P

He died before WWII was over so its pretty hard to get even photos of him, let alone video lol. His legacy lives on the books he wrote.

Very good article. Task complete

nice article, keep it up

Seems there's a downside to every positive trait. Perhaps the stress of being so different got to him in the end. It would seem 46 is very young for such a man to die, but perhaps its because he live many lifetimes in one, so full of achievements.

Interesting story, thanks for sharing it with us.

Perhaps thats what got to him, but was it a life well lived? did he actually enjoyed everything he did? dying so young is sad, we will never know.

It sounds like he used his time on this planet to the best of his ability. 9 languages before the age of 6. At 37 I still only have one fluent and a few numbers to ten in different languages lol.. people are fascinating.

Yeah! Its amazing, i like to believe i'm fluent in english and spanish and i've been studying japanese for a while, but that only makes it 3 @ 22 yo so its still 1/3 at 400% the time lived :-P

That's impressive enough lol!

Impressive mind and interesting read @lunaticpandora

Oh wow! Really fascinating character. It's sad that the world has largely forgotten characters like him. A few months back I read about a genius Indian, will try and see if I can write an article on him. Thanks for this very informative post.

What an amazing story. Like some of the others in the comments section here, I have never heard of this man (and I'm pretty well-read and well-educated.) He certainly is a well-kept secret. Thank you for this post bringing him to our attention. I intend to do more research on him for myself -- when I have an extra three minutes to rub together. (grin)
