Learn Calculus and Art in Video GamessteemCreated with Sketch.

If you were wishing there was a video game to teach you calculus, you're in luck. Triseum's "Variant" is a 3D world designed to do just that. Manipulate the environment around your character, using calculus and see real-world applications of abstract concepts!

Variant is a narrative based adventure game, that teaches you calculus as you progress. Game feedback and interaction allows the players to move forward at their own pace. Teachers can monitor student progression and provide help when needed. The game based learning environment helps to enhance the learning process. Games draw out great learning strategies in students, making the time spent learning a concept more effectively.

Student reactions to the Variant platform were overwhelmingly positive. However, Variant is not their first claim to fame. Triseum's first game "Mecenas", is designed to teach students aspects of art history at a college level while providing socioeconomic context for the different periods of art. The students play a member of the Medici family, in Italy, during the Renaissance. They manage political and economic dealings, as they work their way towards becoming a patron of the arts, or Mecenas.

Triseum plans to unveil a whole suite of art history based games, that will eventually cover all the content in a college-level course. As innovation in education continues, we might even see video game curriculum taking the place of college courses. Can you imagine people in the future getting a college degree from a game studio?

The art is from Triseum's Vimeo page and has an attributive license. Here are links to Triseum's games and Vimeo channel:

This is really really cool. I know that 3D games have a lot to do with trigonometric ratios but don't really understand it too much. Maybe this will be glad good learning opportunity. Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome. Thanks for dropping in! If you enjoyed this article, you may also enjoy my article on Classcraft. It is a game designed to fit any classroom: https://steemit.com/education/@spacecadet1/what-if-school-were-a-video-game

Calculus was one of my best subjects

I started to follow you :)))))

Thanks! I appreciate it!

what platform? computer? might be fun

I believe it is currently on PC. I don't believe they have given details as to what platforms they might expand it to.

Anyone remember playing Math Mountain with the elves or miners?

Do you perhaps mean Treasure Mountain?
I played that a lot, along with all the Math Blaster series, and any other math-based game my Mom could scrounge up. We were homeschooled and we didn't have computer games for the longest time, but when we did get them, we basically got every educational game she could get her hands on. I don't think we had a single non-educational game, unless you count The Oregon Trail :D

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! If you want to see some similar content, check out my profile. I am trying to put out something every day.

It's paid. A studio is developing it. It would be nice if the open source community were to try their hand at this, but at least someone is starting to do it. I believe that once a few companies release games like this, it will start to spread among the gaming community and we'll see some fascinating projects pop up.
