I'm Thinking about Homeschooling My Son - What About Socialization? School Used Fluoride Rinse on Him Without my Consent
I am thinking about homeschooling my son but I am worried about what will happen to his social development skills. He is very social in school and always has been where as I a kid was very shy! So it makes me happy to see him participate in sports and morning tv reports and other fun things kids do to develop their social skills. If I pull him out of that and fast track him even with his after school activities like karate, soccer etc. I don't know if it will be the same. Any experienced homeschoolers here who can maybe chime in?
Plus the school's curriculum is a joke again this year! I mean what happened to text books? They are now the size of pamphlets and the text books they do have say History Channel and Discovery Channel on the covers! I mean this is a joke, right? On top of that, this is the second year the school has used fluoride rinse on my son's teeth without my consent. I always check the box on the form that says NO. I would have thought since I made a big deal about last year they would have known better, instead, they threaten to send the kids home who don't take this poison. Anyway, I would like to hear some of your thoughts about homeschooling and Socialization. I hope everyone has a great day. :0)

To give you some background, my family and my wife's family have homeschooled. I never stepped foot in a public school for education, only for sports.
I refer to something CS Lewis said about the reading of old books, in regards to socialization. He encouraged people to read books that were more than 50 years old, not all, but some of them. That "socializing" with the older books allows us to look at things outside of the current paradigm, and see that history tends to be solving a lot of the same problems.
My mother involved us in social circles with our elders, our peers, and those just a few years ahead of us. It gave us a beautiful balance of what was present, what was just ahead of us, and with wisdom that had gone before us. Because of the flexibility of the homeschool schedule, she could craft our education to challenge us, and not just amuse us.
We've talked before about your son's entrepreneurial spirit. Homeschooling would open the door to foster that even more.

When I say social interaction I don't want ppl to confuse this with playtime I am talking about his life skills as a man. I mean we travel outside the US a lot and I have noticed he is way beyond a lot of kids just from the exposure to different cultures every summer. But he is still young and I want the best for him. I'd consider legal action. I'd also consider media action. I'd also consider other actions, especially if they did this to my flesh-and-blood against my consent, and especially if they did it twice in a row. Good luck to you!
Separately from the school issue, you may want to look into a fluoride detox protocol for your son -- the sooner it is removed, the less damage it can do.

I won't give advise, however as a mother, recent grandmother for the first time and a teacher for many years, I wouldn't place socialization above my decision to protect my child from being poisoned mentally and physically.
My grandkids were homeschooled. Worked out fine. Like you said...provide 'after school' activities if you want them to be around other kids...Karate, gymnastics, gun club, etc.
I've no idea why we want kids to learn to get along with kids. They'll only be kids for a little while..they'll be adults for the rest of their life. It would seem to me that it would be more appropriate to get a head start and teach them to get along with adults from the beginning. Other kids just give them bad habits.

Sleep apnea is scary depending on what level you have it. I wrote a post on it like 2-3 months ago, well about sleep over-all I studied sleeping disorders for a few years! I homeschooled my sons for their full education K-12. They are 31 and 34 years old now. We did sports and 4H and church and they had friends that were public school and homeschooled. We would do field trips sometimes with the homeschool support group too. Sometimes it felt like too much socialization.
They both have college degrees now and both of them chose to be firemen and EMTs even though that is not anything to do with their degrees. They are very well rounded and have advanced far in their careers and the coolest validation of homeschooling is that they plan to homeschool their kids.
Also, it is the best education YOU will ever get. Go for it! You can do it!

Socialization? You mean the kind you get in public school? Swearing, bullying, etc.? There is no evidence--and I mean absolutely zero--that the "socialization" of public school students is better than any other students of any kind whatever, including kids that are "unschooled", where they have no subject matter at all.
The entire socialization thing is a con job. Ignore it.

I spoke to a few parents today about this and I am going to homeschool or cyber school him starting January. He can get his socialization from his Karate, soccer and football along with his Greek and Italian schooling. I guess because he is a little older 12 and isn't shy I will not worry about him being introverted. I wanted to get some references because I know two families who homeschooled their kids and one is a hermit while the other is a socially active kid. I guess it all depends on the parents and the child too. Thanks for your input.
I teach junior high. About a third of the kids in my classes count as socially backward. I don't think school is a good socialization machine. At all.

Yeah, I teach at a charter school and three homeschool co-ops (teens like classes--mixing with others works for them). I like them all for different reasons. But there's no doubt--none whatever--that the homeschool kids are every bit as prepared for life, in every way that matters, as kids that go through any other system. And in my experience, some of them are much BETTER prepared, in ways the public school system could never produce.
