Incentives That Inspire People

in #education7 years ago

Common sense tells us the larger the reward for a task the better the performance will be and this is true when applied to rudimentary tasks, but as we'll see, if the task requires some conceptual, creative thinking, higher rewards do not guarantee better performance.

In fact, some of the best results in terms of new creative ideas are not rewarded in the traditional sense at all. Companies are finding that if you just give creative people some autonomy and get out of their way they will come up with some great ideas all on their own without having to reward them at all.

I don't want to spoil it for you so without further ado, watch this video and learn something new.

Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us

So actually you're saying that if we start produce music for free then we'll produce a better music? LOL i'm kidding ;)
I can tell you from a musician point of view, of course the ideal is also to get your freedom to make your creativity and also get reward for it, but I feel that when i'm actually working making music, if it's for my own purpose and i'm producing for myself then you're right, but lots of the time I find myself working for others.. let's say if i'm working for another person, like producing a song for another singer or just recording someone, without being paid, then if i'm not rewarded I don't fully interested in doing that, cause actually i'm creating but i'm not creating for my own reasons, i'm creating for another person demand, that said, I expect him to reward me.

I can totally relate to that. You may find this story interesting about Amanda Palmer. She gave her music away for free and raised $1.2 million.

Makes perfect sense to me. I am a musician and am inspired when I can be creative with playing, writing music, writing poetry and lyrics or creative ways of marketing. I have had a mechanical type of job in a former day and was inspired by pay and incentives. Personal satisfaction came in being creative. Thanks for sharing an intriguing point.

Very nice post @luzcypher ...blessings

Money is never my motivation...

I made a song about it.

"NOT GOLD"

for #openmic this week!

I 100% agree! Loved this bro :)

It's a new world. The world where we do what we want, and because what we want is what holds our attention, the product is better and more authentic.

Turning something into a job kills it. And the product suffers as a result.

Used to be that all the great advances were made by amateurs, backyard scientists, folks tinkering around in their barns and bedrooms and parlors. Because they followed their muse.

That time is coming around again. The programmed search for truth has proved to be a victim of its own internal contradictions. If you pay a man to find truth, you will find that he will accept a wide range of what constitutes proof.

Interesting video. I personally don't do well with structured work enviroments as I find it to be constraining and at times counterproductive. I left my previous job to pursue work in the 3d printing industry with a long time friend of mine that has been building custom 3d printers for over 7 years. While we may not be the most sucessful 3d printing company we have been at the forefront of the industry and are constantly coming up with unique solutions for the challenges faced in the world of 3d printing when trying to combine precision with speed and repeatability. I like to attribute that to the enjoyment we get out of the work we do and the satisfaction of being innovators in an emerging technology even if we aren't always being compensated monetarily.
