4.2. Information explosion

No definition for information explosion also hasn’t reached a consensus among the information scientists.

We are therefore confronted with several opinions. One of them is that information explosion is not only a continuous growth of the overall amount of the accessible information, but also an increase in the scale of its dissemination [2].

Another possible definition is that the information explosion is a continuous growth of scientific and technical publications and information records of all kinds of literature [2].

Then we have an opinion that the information explosion is more of a misinformation explosion, through which scientists are exposed to a huge amount of data, ideas, and conclusions that can hardly be processed during their lives [2].

Some also argue that the information explosion is actually just a publication explosion, or even just an explosion of scientific articles [2].

For the purposes of this work, only the latest information explosion, initiated by the birth and widening of the Internet, is relevant and practically still ongoing up to date. Only this information explosion is also relevant to the current information society that we are part of.

This extract from afore mentioned definitions will be applied throughout the thesis. Information explosion in the most modern sense is certainly not just a "sudden" increase of accessible information. The number of information available has increased exponentially since the birth of the Internet. Are we going through an information explosion every year due to the sudden increase of information? No. Information increases at incredible speeds over time. The truth is that the sudden increase of the information has triggered the phenomenon we call information explosion, but now the increase of the information is no longer sudden (it is highly anticipated), and yet the information explosion still persists.

The information explosion does not only concern scientists and their publishing activities as many sources indicate [2]. The truth is that the information explosion has allowed scientists to publish and access publications more easily, and it is also probable that they have been one of the cause of the information explosion, or rather the first contributors of the information to the cyberspace. However, saying that the information explosion is only affecting the scientists, or that they are the only ones who contribute to it is short-sighted and emotional. It is irrefutable that the whole information society is contributing to the continual upsurge of the information explosion, both in terms of content creation and consumption. Indeed, the information society has very readily transferred its vast amount of attention to digital forms of shared information [8]. It is only logical that the scientists themselves are contributing to the information explosion in an entirely minor proportion due to their quantity.

The ongoing information explosion is a large continuous increase in the available information due to the information society's participation in the creation and consumption of this information. All this was triggered by a sudden increase of information due to the ever-decreasing price of computing power, information storage, the Internet, smart devices that allow us to connect to the cyberspace at will, and ever-increasing user-friendliness [1].
