Building our Homestead, a Little Differently than Expected...

in #ecotrain6 years ago

We used to throw these underground parties in run down wearhouses all over Brooklyn...

We were calling these parties: No Man's Land Extravaganza... and you can bet they got wild!

Imagine a bunch of fun, life loving Eastern Europeans, a Peruvian, myself (the token Frenchy) and an Italian from Brooklyn...

The calm before the storm

The night would usually start with a couple Gypsy Punk bands. Some people came in costumes, some had theirs made at the party!

We managed to get an ex-cop to do security (she always warned us when the man came too close so we'de have enough time to hide any evidence of unpermited business that may be taking place, such as the bar!). Our doorman was typically our good friend Gunkle (because everyone needs a gay unkle) the party queen of NYC, who greeted people, took their money and made sure everyone came in laughing.

As the crowd grew, the bar kept everyone well quenched and the bands finished their sets, the dance music started.... still keeping a bit of that Eastern European vibe mixed in. Than fire performers would push dancers out the way to show their fire magic, and airialists twirled up and down their long silks hanging from the ceiling.

I mean these parties were wild, they went on 'till the next day, everyone was well pickled in alchohol or whatever else floated about!

We organized them in industrial neighborhoods where no one bothered us. Yeah we got shut down once or twice, I even had to go in front of a judge once for having an unlicensed club and serving alcohol! That party would have been one of our biggest, No Man's Land: Bastille Day. We even had built a Vive la Revolution barricade, out of funiture and all the junk we had found on the roof, with a French flag and all.

Next time, listen to your gut, I told myself. I really had a bad feeling about that venue...

Today, No Man's Land is what we're calling this property. Though it seems to have been changed by our little human to Dream-Land, and it is much more fitting, I love it!

Building our Multi-family Homestead with Anarchist Tendencies has been a challenge so far. We're completely off the grid (electric and water), and we want to start making the land work for us. We, don't have much experience farming so until we do, we're goin to organize events, workshops and other gatherings (such as farm to table dinner socials with a mountain view!).

We started by inviting campers to pitch a tent on the property and I can't believe it's working so well.

This is a review from one of our campers:

Where do I start!
Dreamland is a very beautiful and special space. Jessica and her husband demonstrated outstanding hospitality; they were very down to Earth people. There are many different places to camp out in the woods, including a convenient space next to a small road with a functional outdoor bathroom. For the more ambitious, there are other potential places to set up camp deeper in the woods. The hike is not that long, but can be difficult because of a few hills.
My group wanted to be next to the river, so we set up camp near the water. To get to the river, we had to go down a hill (a few ropes along the path made it easy to balance).

The river was spectacular! There were flat rocks in the water that allowed you to stand up, as well as deeper parts where your feet could not touch the ground. A small rocky "island" in the middle of the river was really fun to sunbathe/relax. Swimming in nighttime was utterly magical. The stars shined brighter than the Sun, and all that is felt is peace, wonder, and gratefulness. Be careful on the way up, and make sure to bring flashlights.

There was firewood all around us, all we needed to do was walk and collect. If something was forgotten, (in our case it was a pan), somebody could drive into town and come back in less than 45 minutes. We felt very private, safe, and carefree in our campsite.
I took my time with this review to demonstrate how lovely, and above all, magical this place was. I have nothing bad to say. I expect to come back.

Such a lovely review, it made us very happy to read it 😊!

I have a new dream, and that is to build an atmosphere in the forest for our campers, an atmosphere I have seen over and over across the globe while traveling and spending time at backpacker hostels. This has been the plan for a while, but without camping... Before winter there will be a communal kitchen, a few compost toilets dotted around the site and a bunch of hidden interactive structures, art and secret fun spaces to play in.

I know, I know my list of dreams is growing large, but I do have this tendency of making them come true somehow...

So far it seems very promising for creating an income from the land. In a way we're using our Living Capital to make a little something and that makes us feel like we're on the right path and we're not cutting down the forest!

We just got ourselves a couple Bell Tents to offer as more fancy glamping rentals. Our goal is to have those tents pay themselves back before the end of the season!

It's not really tight as it will be, we just wanted to see how it went up! And we plan on dressing this one like something out of India or the Middle East...

We'll give people a taste of life off-grid!

So we may become a bit of a funny campground for a while, but no worries while we do that we'll be working on our homesteading and survival skills.

Thank you for reading and I hope to have inspired someone out there. Life is about helping eachother find our way.

Interesting twist on your homestead. Sounds like a solid idea building on your own experience to make your homestead dream work for you.

Yeah right, why not use my experience! I didn't realize we could do that when we started!!!
