Welcome To Orgiva!!! The most Interesting Town on The Planet!!!

Orgiva is a totally unique and amazing place. I certainly don't know of anywhere else quite like it. Maybe you have to see for yourself to really get a feel of it, but I'm going to try and describe it here.

Have you ever heard of Orgiva, that small, scruffy town in the Alpujarras? it's nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, south of Spain. It has a meagre population of 6.ooo people, an economy based on olive and citrus production. Its houses are whitewashed, it's bars are plentiful and the sun shines over 300 days a year.

So what's so special? Well, the sun does shine over 300 days a year..., but, there's more...It's half an hour to the beach, half an hour to the snow-line, an hour from free, natural hot springs? Well, also, there's a lot going on. As well as the many local fiestas and nights of fireworks lighting up the sky, as well as the flamenco music heard loud, playing out the car windows in the barrios, there's an enormous alternative culture going on here.

Orgiva hosts many alternative communities. There's the famous Beneficio, the tipi valley that Rainbow minded folks flock to from all over the world. Nestled in a beautiful Barranco on the side of a steep hillside with eucalyptus trees and its own fresh spring water, people live year-round under canvas.

The road stops, you have to get out and walk to your home. You would be amazed by the things you see people carrying up the very steep track; 13-kilo gas bottles, wheelbarrows full of children, enormous sacks of potatoes for the communal dinner, long beams for somebodies imaginative, makeshift shelter.

Then we have El Morreon, a valley rich in Civil War history where now mostly foreigners live. Here, travellers with perhaps anarchistic tendencies, have lovingly restored old cortijos and converted trucks, buses and horseboxes, domes and yurts into cosy, off-grid homes. There's plenty of parties here, which are always open to everyone, and always with a festival feel to them. Here you can see top quality cabaret acts, lightshows and international DJs all for free. Can you believe that?

Then there's Cigarrones, situated on a riverbed, where local farmers mix with aspiring natural birth midwives and anyone can freely park their camper for a week or two, this also used to be the home of Dragonfest, a huge free-party that would go on for weeks at a time, over the years this became to large and way too much fun was being had so the authorities shut it down, Booooooooooo!!!!!!!

There are also many, many, many off-grid smaller communities. Look up at the hillsides on any of the surrounding hills and you see the solar panels and white canvas of yurts shimmering in the sun. Lots of travellers are attracted to Orgiva for its spirituality too. There's a large and growing Sufi community, a Buddhist monastery not far away and hundreds of people attending weekly Satsung meetings. Every so-called new age or personal growth therapy is represented here.

Go to any health food store (there are three, plus plenty of independent stalls on the local market) and you will find yourself in a sea of flyers for all manner of interesting, free-thinking events and courses and of course the up and coming steemit conference.

And as for children... well, I have often been told that this is why families stay here and this is the reason we come here every year. Firstly, this is a place where children are free to be free range. Children have space to play here plus good weather to be outside. Not just the 'hippie' children, playing on their farms and bits of land, but the local children too, playing in the narrow streets where cars don't venture, playing in their parents and grandparents olive groves, their gardens, the town squares. Here you can hear children everywhere. They aren't afraid to be outside. Their laughter rings through the streets and through the valleys. Where else are their children not afraid to be seen and heard? Where else are children out with their families until midnight in the holidays, visible in the bars and restaurants, part of their families social life not excluded from it?

We believe strongly in home education, but plenty of others here, believe in alternative schools. There is a Warldorf school, a Montessori playgroup, a Free school and many home ed groups and teachers. People from all over Europe come here to give birth naturally and in freedom too, with an astonishing number of local lay homebirth midwives. How we give birth should surely be our choice?

Orgiva is a place that stands for freedom. Spain is a complicated place if we look at the news and know anything of its history, but I would argue that Spanish people have a natural belief in living a happy, simple, free life where nobody tells them what to do. I think that's why all us foreigners from colder, harsher climates are here. We're attracted to this attitude. When we say 'manana', we mean, we'll do it in our own time, when its right for us, not when we're told to. Everybody here has the right to say 'manana'.

In a week I am doing a steemit conference right here in Orgiva, Why Orgiva? because wouldn't you love to see and hear about the lives these VERY interesting people live? Lets get 6000 Orgivians on steemit.

Peace and love to the World.

This is a place I would give up everything in my life and live there mate! I will even go further in my statement...this is the real life that we are supposed to lead...freedom, nature, happiness, no stress, children playing freely without any fear! This is so rare to find nowadays in most parts of the world!
Enjoy each and every moment there mate!
Cheers!

✅ So true, we are moving away from a natural family/community-based society towards a very distracted and disconnected society. It's great to have modern conveniences, medicines, etc. but we really need to find a middle ground in the way we live. We need a return to nature and supportive values.

👪 A worldwide "everyone turn off your damn electronics and spend time with your family and friends" day wouldn't hurt either!

👪 A worldwide "everyone turn off your damn electronics and spend time with your family and friends" day wouldn't hurt either!

Yes yes yes! Let's make this happen.

One whole day without Steem, are you crazy!? 😜

Thanks @progressivechef,
We are in love with this place, we have looked for land here but have not found anything with its own spring.

I think places like this are the future and we should all start leaning towards this type of life if we want to keep this planet alive.

Thanks for stopping by my friend :)

do you not think rainwater harvesting could be enough if you have big enough storage? In taos the have 9 inches a year but use water several times over and manage to make it work?

Im curious also,, how much very approximately does a plot cost over there, lets say the cheapest option ?

It just doesn't rain enough here, it's so dry.
We are at the bottom of a mountain so there are springs but even these can dry up in the heat of the summer.

The other thing is the land, there is not much that hasn't been sold, and what is left can be quite expensive as it has become very popular here.

An average plot of land of about 2000 square meters cost around €20-40k without water.

We have looked here for 3 years but it's not easy, Portugal is much cheaper and has more water but nowhere can compare to Orgiva.

thanks for that info mark.. good to know..it SOUNDS to me like if you have enough storage you could manage IF you have springs.. but you do need huge tanks to get through the dry times.. but hey you have seen it !

and yes, im sure Portugal has much cheaper plots WITH water. .so that is worth remembering

This place is much like where we live (Crestone, CO, USA). Same types of off-grid houses, same community, I think our sun shines more than theirs. 😉 But just by like a month. 😁 However, we are in the middle of the mountains. No beach near here. But the Sand Dunes sometimes hold water and it can LOOK like a beach. 😍

Totally beautifully.

And thank you for a well put together post.

Wow, Crestone sounds like my kinda place, I would love to see a post about this place?

Thank you for reading and commenting on this post.

Bless.

It's pretty great.

Here's a post I did a few weeks ago introducing Crestone a little. If you have time, watch the video too, it's beautiful.

A Place of the Heart

I plan to continue to present Crestone, it's people and the area to Steemit.

Have a beautiful day!
😍

What an amazing and interesting community! No wonder you like to travel there.
Thanks for the great pictures and for describing it to us.

Thank you Linda,
We can't help but come back here year after year. It's a magical place filled with wonderful character's.

Thanks for reading :)

Bless.

It's been refreshing to follow Mark and his family on their journey. I think he helps to open the eyes of so many of us trapped in the daily grind within the 'rules' of the places we each live.

me, as well, i am in and out orgiva for more then 7 years and i am absolutely looooving it! the people, the nature, the freedom, the tolerance, the families. we are living in a bubble that it is so beautiful created. made with peace and love. and still growing. orgiva has been populated by alternative people for about 37 years and it is continues expending day by day. new people and new communities emerge. so if in the beginning they were only a couple of hippies, now around this little village are around 10 different communities. everybody with an open heart is welcomed! :) thank you mark for sharing it :)

Yes @purplemoon
Isn't this place just wonderful?
I'm so glad you are now on steemit and I hope soon we will have an Orgiva community on this amazing platform.

Imagine if everyone in Orgiva was on here, steemit would be better for it, the communities in Orgiva have so much to offer the rest of the world, Orgiva is proof you can live in peace and harmony outside of the system.

People in Orgiva often come together to help each other unlike anywhere I have seen before, imagine then if we all was on steemit supporting each others stories, its a recipe for success in my eyes.

Thanks for joining @purplemoon, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Bless.

Any place with that much sun and a beach nearby sounds great to me, but I was amazed by the life you describe there. It's hard to believe such a place exists! And I'd like my son to get that kind of freedom which is something simply not possible in the middle of a big city!
That's it - time to quit this platform as this is not the first post that makes me want to sell everything and just move.
Hope you'll stay there for quite some time and enjoy the sun!

@ladyrebecca this place is so special, children here are so free and confident, our kids are off in the morning and come back with wide eyes, dirty clothes and hungry bellies.
After some food and a big kiss their off again to explore the world with their many friends.

Love Orgiva!

You took some amazing pictures Mark! I enjoyed the detailed description of this small unique community.

One thing that you mentioned that I’m a HUGE fan of are Midwives. All four of our children were delivered by midwives and we would never have it any other way. If we could have afforded a home birth we would have went for it but midwives are the next best thing. I am so thankful for them because we were blessed to have Natural births with their guidance and support.

Thank you @crosheille,
The midwives here are amazing, so many natural births, by the river, in birth pools you name it!

When you first come here you realize what life is all about.

Thanks for stopping by.

Bless.

Oh my I bet births by the river are just amazing to witness. I’m so excited for you and your family to experience such a place as this.

Many blessings~ 😊

Finally you have reached your destination, which you had already mentioned, the beautiful places Orgiva.looking great to enjoying your children, beautiful pictures you have posted about natural beauty. Happy to hear that only 6000 people in that particular place with such a beautiful nature.I think it is mostly on North Pole, where exist the beautiful weather. Thanks for sharing such an amazing fact, wish you good luck for your mission steemit development. You are becoming Now a grand embesador of our community. Wish you good luck good health and happiness my dear friend.

Thank you @maya7.

I'm glad you enjoyed this post, Orgiva is wonderful, there really is no place like it.
Thanks for reading and commenting my friend.

This place truly seems wonderful! I haven't gotten to Spain yet, but it is on my to-see list, and now this place is too. I think it's very important to have (and nurture) such places that encourage freedom and allow you to be who you want. We need more of that! I can't wait for your conference ;)

This is definitely a place you should visit, the people, the nature and the atmosphere are one of a kind.

Thanks for the feedback @honeydue

Just one word for Orgiva: WOW! Okay, no,I have more to say. Love, love everything about the place. What I love most is how people of different cultures and beliefs come together and live harmoniously and I also like the fact that children can roam freely around. Would love to be here one day.

wow WHAT a find!! this looks and sounds really wonderful mark! i may even have to pay a visit one day when im next in spain!!!

Thank you @eco-alex, This place is a true testimony to what can happen when people do their own thing and brake away from the system. Peace love and harmony :)
