If we were all telepathic, how would the world be different? The Ecotrain question of the week!
What a question! Here we all are, living together on one planet, in small spaces, eye to eye.. and yet seemingly in different worlds. We are the only animal or life that knows how to doubt our own thinking. We also live in a world where we have learned to hide our thoughts and emotions from each other. We all live in our own worlds because our thoughts make up our perspectives about everything, and two people will see very different things when looking at the same situation. We have learned to be deceitful and to lie, because in the quest for survival or personal gain people have found hiding the truth from each other to be prosperous. The consequences of hiding our real thoughts from each other are far reaching. They touch on the obvious things like telling lies having to live a lie to cover it up. But the consequences of hiding our thoughts or the truth from each other reach further and deeper than this. As humans we need intimacy and close community to be nurtured and content. We need family, friends and real emotional connections for us to be at peace and to find our place in the world.
Our ability to hide the our thoughts and the truth from each other has fostered the world that we live in today. Domination and control of the masses has thrived due to our ability to lie, deceive each other, and withhold huge secrets. Our entire government and geopolitical world hinges on our ability to lie and withhold information and our knowledge and thoughts. Debates, negotiations, elections, business deals, the list is long and wide.
So, have you ever given any thought to how the world would be if we were all telepathic? What would conversations looks like? How would they differ? Would things be better, or would being telepathic be just too much and throw the world into utter chaos?
I would like to start with a change that may not be obvious, but would be a major change! Imagine how animal farming would change and improve! How could a farmer keep chickens, pigs and other animals in tiny cages, whilst able to hear their thoughts? Telepathy is just as relevant to animals as it is to people! Those responsible for animal farming would have vastly different practices, and IM sure we would see quite a few more vegans than we see today! I mean its a bit hard to kill a cow after you just had a chat with it!
Politics would be turned on its head. Gone would be the ubiquitous lies from politicians and people in power. There would be no more lies, and there would be no reason to lie either. The entire notion of lying is ridiculous, and that it is so pervasive in our world boggles my mind. In fact, there may well be no politicians in a world where we are all telepathic. The entire system that we have now is based on the richest remaining rich, through great corruption and control of the people. Politics is just a symptom of that paradigm, we do not actually need them. They are just a front for a small group of people who only live and persist because they are able to hide their thoughts and lies.
Now let's get to the juicy stuff shall we! ... To the bedroom! Making love with your partner whilst being telepathic with them would most likely be a very nice experience! We would know and feel each other in far deeper ways, and be able to share very intimate moments in a whole other level, and perhaps dimensions! Ill let your imagination finish this paragraph off!
The real answer to this question actually depends on whether we suddenly become telepathic or were born into a world that had always been telepathic. I think the two are VERY different situations. If we overlay being telepathic on todays society, it looks like a real shit storm! Can u imagine if we all woke up and knew everyones thoughts and secrets? All you would have to do it think of someone and you could know their thoughts. In this case the world would enter a kind of turmoil and chaos that I would say would probably lead to bloody Armageddon! I mean, who wouldn't be angry at who?!
But a world where everyone was and had been telepathic would be an amazing place. I think you just have to imagine a perfect Utopia where we all live and act as one, because when you can hear everyone's thoughts you become one with everyone. It is easy to hurt others when we don't have to hear their thoughts or feel their pain. .. but when you are telepathic and you hurt someone, you end up hurting yourself. Telepathy strides across the language barrier, and so the entire planet could communicate with each other and understand and work together very harmoniously.
Slave labour would be unthinkable, and torture and abuse would also be an act of madness. Violence, rape, theft, and even verbal abuse would also be almost unheard of. Conflicts would happen far less often since they mostly happen due to communication errors. The spoken language is SO inefficient! From what I have noticed we understand about 1-10% of what we say to each other, and remember about 1% of that. The spoken language is very subjective, and words have different meanings to different people. When i say 'many' some of you will think or 20, and others 1,000. When I say blue some of you will see a dark navy blue, and others a light sky blue. Our ability to express ourselves through words is a great skill that few posses, and even then even fewer people know how to listen properly and hear what is being said. Most people are so preoccupied with wondering what the other person is thinking that they do not even engage with them properly.
This question of the week was an unusual one! It has brought up some very interesting ideas and themes. It has made me realise how much of our world is based on lies and deceit. That makes me sad. Especially because if we did live in an honest open world, then this world really could sing and dance. We could all live together, and each of us could have everything that we need to live and be happy.
So we may not be able to be telepathic today, but maybe after reading this you might think about when and why you lie? Do the benefits of lying outweigh the costs? Is it worth sacrificing your freedom, mood, relationships, and life, to uphold a lie? Is personal gain even possible without us all rising together. Rich people are rarely happy. They have to live on a mountain of lies to everyone they know. Nothing is sacred, nothing is real, everything is lies and pretense. What a life is this? What a crazy world we live in?! Bring on telepathy!!!

Even with telepathic abilities, you might want to mute it. The essential problem is the ego. You would understand me feeding my ego and muting my telepathic ability, how would that change anything? Imagine a world without ego's, only one-ness. With this question, your post would not differ much, all serving the greater common, a beautiful world. Even your bedroom part would become a more ultimate experience :-)

good thoughts alex about the reasons we lie and perhaps it's for our evolution to coexist better. also interesting points about politicians not being able to lie. i would hope that if we can understand each other better through hearing thoughts that rape and war would stop, but as another commenter said below, i'm not sure the people who do those things would care even if they were more connected to the other person. a sad thought, i know. ultimately, it's an interesting thought experiment in how this may spur more empathy... or make sex really great, as you say! lol
thanks mountainjewel. YEs i think its impossible to imagine it happening as an overnight change. But maybe if telepathy evolved slowly, over many years, then things could change more naturally and calmly..
It would be a great movie to see what happens to a powerful, rich, influential person who wakes up one day and can suddenly hear all his friends and colleagues thoughts. If you hear just about everyone thinking that you are a complete douchebag, it might just initiate change.. esp if it's your wife and kids, and even the pet dog thinking it ;+) Imagine if even your goldfish looks at you and says "My god you are a douchebag".. LOL!
hahaha! yes this reminds me of a movie that is one of my faves called la belle verte.... this actually happens to a doctor in the movie, pretty close to what you say!.. ultimately it's a consciousness-raising film that shows what would happen if telepathy and many other "out there" skills were to be the norm.. here it's online

I remember an episode of the 1960's Star Trek was about a group who read minds and only communicated by mind thought. Never Spoke.
I find I do not suffer from any of the 7 deadly sins. I used too until I realised the more you have the less you live. I now own a few old clothes, laptop, and Ipad. I live out of a suitcase even when staying a while.
I just have not found home yet.
A lot of problems can get resolved if we were all telepathically connected but with our senses being so active and always on the run at times it would be dangerous also. I would find my self completely exposed with no privacy if the mind reading keeps happening. But definitely lot of Pros then Cons.

You have covered so much in your answer and all so positive. I loved what you say with regards to Animal farming, it is something that I find very upsetting, it would be great to see that become cruelty free. And truth is a big one here too, I was a bit negative in my answer. I really have enjoyed this question, it was a lot bigger than i thought it would be so much to think of and consider. Thanks @eco-alex for keeping our brains working and making us dig deep.

All everyone wants is to be loved. Whether you're a sociopath CEO, a hardened criminal or a child. They may not all admit it, but when they're alone and thinking of truth, all they want is a hug.
I think that we are all telepathic, to certain degrees. Most of us think of receiving telepathic information in the sense of hearing another persons thoughts but information can be transferred or perceived in many ways. There are group consciousnesses around that feed off of each others energy, you can see this clearly in the political and ideological divides that we have around the world. Some people are just more attuned to picking up on the various subtleties than others but it's always going on in one form or another.
The question is would this impact how we feel about others.
If someone we knows dies or is hurt we are emotionally effected very deeply, but if a far away nation goes to war and millions die, it hardly registers with us. Yes we sympathise but we don't really feel it.
Why? Well imagine if every birth, marriage, death, birthday, anniversary and break up we felt as if it was involving someone we know well, we would be flooded with emotions and overload.
So we can assume that we would only telepathically link with people we care about, as a means of practicality.
If that was the case would large societal changes occur, or would we all just be more honest and happier in our relationships with those who we care about most?
well for me, when we are all telepathic our minds direct our awareness.. so we would learn to focus and direct our attention to where we want it rather than be overwhelmed with the worlds thoughts and feelings. So we can link with whoever or whatever we want.. AND lets remener telepathy works both ways, so we can send love and support to people we link with (like family) who are suffering. Actually I know this distance healing from personal experience, and some of my family are very powerful distant healers and psychics..
So yes i would say very large societal changes would occur, as well as us becoming more honest and happy people.. but initially if this happened overnight I guess it might get pretty ugly at first.. ;-)
