Final Earthship Seminar Transcription Table Of Contents: + Incredible Earthship Video To Truly Educate and Inspire.
This is my final post in this Biotecture series! The transcriptions have been completed from around 8 hours of video footage, and we now have a very nice series of posts that focuses on each part of Earthship Biotecture.
Session 1 consists of 8 parts and focuses mainly on the global model and understanding how Earthships work fundamentally. We look at many things including how they work, what systems are a part of an earthship, how to adapt the global model to any location, how to build so that you can literally live at -20 Celcius without needing to heat your home. We also look at important questions around permits and how to get through building regulations, and what are the best locations to even try to do it.
Session 2 consists of 12 parts and is all about the systems, e.g. rain water harvesting, water storage, power options, power systems, botanical cells, food production, and more. Once you understand the Global Model you can then start to drill into the systems in more detail. We also go through the concepts such as "designing down", Decentralisation and how that relates to Earthship Biotecture (power, water etc).
Anyone who is considering building a home for themselves should look at Earthships as a solution. When you have taken the time to study them, in the real world.. you will very quickly discover that Earthships are superior to ANY kind of home and in just about every way. No other building can provide an official negative carbon footprint, because no other building can perform so well as to not even need fuel to heat or cool it. No other building can withstand earthquakes because Earthships do not have a concrete foundation, and there is no mortar holding it together. The massive tyre walls can not crack or break because they are held together by gravity, and will last thousands of years in situ.
Simply put, no other method or approach to sustainable building has taken every need and requirement of the people living in it. The entire building functions like a finely tuned machine, that is what an Earthship is at its core... the most finely tuned home ever created, that performs so well and in so many ways, that it has redefined what a home is supposed to be.
The entire series is linked below, along with a few videos that you MUST WATCH if you want to understand what I am saying in a quick and very inspiring way. The reason you won't hear about Earthships much in mainstream media (although every news organisation has featured it positively)... and you wont get your local builder to want to try it out, is because biotecture is not a commercial approach. Architects and builders have a system of working that is shaped by their priorities.. and their priorities are to make as much profit as possible with no regard for performance or the sustainability of the materials, or the people who live in these buildings.

Earthship Underground House Tour- Sustainable and Net Zero Living...
Derek "Deek" Diedricksen visits an Earthship (the architectural brainchild of Michael Reynolds) in Taos, New Mexico. The particular model, like many others, features earth berm air intakes, a water recycling system for its grey water, and the luxury of two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and even a two car garage! Ashley Turin gives us a full out tour of this, one of the newest Earthship builds on the Taos compound. This sustainable and passive solar home just may give you a few ideas for your own future designs.

Living off-grid in an Earthship home is about many things. It is not just an ethical choice or a building type choice, it is also a lifestyle choice. When you start to live off-grid, and self-sufficiently, you embark on a break out from the matrix/zeitgeist. You start to unplug yourself from the normal, dependent, vulnerable, and highly controlled way of life that many people are used to in cities and highly developed countries. When you are truly self-sufficient and out of debt you take away some of the main sources of stress: buying food, paying the bills, covering the mortgage or rent, and needing to work full-time to allow this to continue. We can also look at environmental issues and great need to build smarter and in a more connected way, especially in the face of climate change. Our global population is rising and with it the poverty level and inequality of wealth in all forms. To compound this issue, the cost of living is also hurtling up! We are moving toward a very unsafe and unsustainable future if we continue to build and live in the same way that we have been doing.
Did you know, I built four Earthships in India as well as being instrumental the creation of the first Earthship in the UK, Earthship Brighton. If you are also on this path and would like to read my story, I have recently published a book. It is not only a great story, but a valuable resource for you to learn from. I had no experience or training when I embarked on my mission, but managed to successfully build a gorgeous home called Earthship Karuna.
You can buy this book with Steem on the homesteaders co-op. Whilst you are there please do have a look at some of the other products as there are all kinds of great things there!
