Economists Praveen Chakravarty and Vivek Dehejia believe night lights on earth captured by satellites from outer space can be a good way to measure inequality. Perhaps they're right.
About India's 380 districts in 12 states were a fifth as bright as the big cities of Mumbai and Bangalore, according to them. They also found that the average person in the country's three richest states Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra was three times as rich as the average person in the three poorest states Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
Why economic inequality is at its highest and what it means for India?
The standard response is, due to poor governance and inadequate skills for jobs in poorer areas; but that's not a good answer, is it? According to writer and activist Arundhati Roy, India is a corporate upper caste state and that the ruling upper caste is literally at war and used the nation's military against the minorities, which included aerial bombardment on the defenceless farmers in rural areas. So poor governance is never a good answer. What the economic inequality means for India is, the forces of separatism that is already ongoing will only find one more justification for their movement.
Something, to understand other things
If you don't understand India's caste, you won't understand India: unless you have the tools to measure the level of permeation of India's caste over the society, politics and economy, your expertise won't yield any level of accuracy in whatever that you intend to measure about India. And that certainly includes – should you want to study – the nation's economic inequality.
