Europe is awaiting and hoping that Catalonia does not repeat the fate of Ukraine (Part 2)

in #economics7 years ago (edited)

After the Catalan Parliament adopted a resolution on Catalonia's autonomy and the Spanish government, under the leadership of Marian Rajoy, officially suspended the Catalan regional government, Madrid is expected to take over business in Catalonia today and begin to exercise direct control in practice, so at least until early regional elections December 21st.

Catalonian Parliament

Two days back, deposed Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, was set off to Belgium. This was confirmed by the Belgian lawyer, to which the Catalan president turned to. Several members of the removed Catalan government also fled. Spain has filed charges against Puigdemont and his ministers for persecuting and appropriating funds. They are threatened by up to 30 years in prison for alleged acts.

Although the EU does not support separatism in Catalonia, European offices fearfully monitor the evolution of the situation in Spain. Earlier, European Council President Donald Tusk said "Madrid is the only partner in the negotiations with Brussels."

Carles Puigdemont, the former leader of Catalonia, in Girona, Spain, on Saturday. The attorney general said Mr. Puigdemont should face rebellion charges after the regional Parliament declared independence.

At the same time, the EU rejects any prospect of mediation between Barcelona and Madrid and is holding it passively, as if all this happens in the Far East or in the countries of the South of Africa.

Nationalism and separatism, especially in countries like Spain, always go hand in hand, and in order to preserve the territorial integrity of the central government, they mainly resort to military force.

The words of Donald Tusk show that nothing will change and that Spain will remain the only EU partner in the negotiations. The smartest thing that could be thought of in Brussels was the statement "they hope that the Spanish government will use the force of arguments, not the argument of force." And that's all.

The European Union once again shows its impotence. That was the case in 2014 in Ukraine, when the ministers of Poland, Germany and France signed a document guaranteeing a peaceful transition, a transitional government and early elections. After the signing, they traveled home, and the same night a riot broke out in Kiev.
