Meet the Steem powered Youtube called DTube! @SteemitNetwork

Hosting videos on Steem has always been a challenge and finally someone has decided to solve this issue. @heimindanger has created a decentralized videos sharing platform which hosts files on Steem using IPFS!

What is DTube?

According to the founder @heimindanger

DTube is an application fully written in javascript, that runs in  the browser, that allows you to upload and watch videos on top of the  IPFS Network. Moreover, it uses STEEM as a database and enables earning  rewards from your uploads.

Development

Dtube.video has been the initiative of @heimindanger with the support of some other Steemians. According to @heimindanger, he wanted to get witnesses to jointly host the nodes however this did not work out as he found out that most Steem witnesses were not technically knowledgeable enough to setup and host the IPFS nodes.

@heimindanger has decided to host the DTube.video IPFS nodes with IPFS Store, a website that allows you to pay in Bitcoin to keep your files on the IPFS network.

All videos published will be be published automatically to the Steemit account of the uploader. Dtube.video also allows users to login with multiple accounts!

Getting started

To use DTube, one would have to login using their Steemit account username and their posting key - not password! Not wanting to risk the password of users on infrastructure which is vulnerable to hackers, the site requests only your posting key.

After logging in you simply upload your video, thumbnail and enter the video info just like on Youtube. What's more, you can embed videos from DTube to other Steem data clients such as Steemit.

The video IPFS hash is stored inside the json_metadata of a post and embed code would look like <video src='https://ipfs.io/ipfs/videohash'></video>

Visit DTube.video now at https://www.dtube.video. Follow their Steemit account now at @DTube and show your support for the project by upvoting their posts - this is one of the ways the project will be funded.

@heimindanger on his creation;

While I personally believe that decentralization is the future,  don't get your hopes too high yet. Competing with YouTube is an heavy  task that cannot be done by one man. My intent with this project was to  practically demonstrate the possibility of decentralized video on top of  IPFS. It works, but we don't know how well it will work in the  long-term. YouTube also has a lot of extra features that makes the  experience superior. What I built, represents maybe 1% of the work  required to have something that can compete with YouTube. I built some  walls, but there is no insulation, or painting, and the whole building  might collapse at any time.
