Boosting my plants with compost

in #dtube5 years ago (edited)

Dear all,

Today is a perfect gardening day! The weather is cloudy and my compost is ready to use!

For those who would like to learn how to make compost at home, it's extremely easy. All you need to do is throw all your uncooked organic waste in a bucket or on a pile, and wait until nature does its job. It's not complicated, and you don't need to understand the whole science behind it to make compost at home.

All you need to know is that in order to create a good compost pile, you need to mainly add greens (nitrogen) and browns (carbon). These are the most important ones, and even if you get the proportions "wrong", nature will still decompose it at some point. The only thing that changes is how long it will take. If you do it right, it will only take a few weeks.

Example of greens:

  • fresh grass clippings
  • veggie and fruit peels
  • coffee grounds

Examples of browns:

  • dry leafs
  • wood chips
  • dried grass clippings or hay
  • paper or cardboard

Keep your pile moist, but not too wet. If it's too dry, it won't decompose fast enough. If it's too wet it will become stinky. It will be ready when it turns black and when you can't recognize any of what you've thrown into the pile.

Now they make these special buckets if you live in a city and want to keep it indoors. It's a great way to make use of your organic waste, even if it's just for your ornamental plants.

Have you tried making compost? How did it go?

Good work Eve. That compost looked like the good stuff for sure! And the trees look super healthy 🙂

In the UK it takes more like a year for the compost to break down properly. I dream of a couple of months for such good dark muck 😂

You're looking well. How's the pregnancy going?

OMG one year? But I guess it's because of the climate, right? And what if you had your pile in your greenhouse or in a container indoors, maybe it would be faster?

It's actually funny because at first I would be obsessed with my compost and check every 2-3 days, turn it around to make sure it gets enough air etc. And guess what, it never became as dark as it is now. This time, I totally forgot about it (kept throwing stuff on top of it, but that's it). One day I walk by and was like "damn this looks more than ready!!". =)

Pregnancy is OK, feeling great (for now!) ahaha thanks for asking. Hope you are doing well too?

Yeah you're spot on, it's because of the cold weather and if I put it in the greenhouse it would be much quicker but there's no space in there. Only just space for lettuce in the winter and tomatoes in the summer lol

If you turn the compost less then the heap gets hotter which is why it broke down quicker and made better compost when you lost the turning obsession 😂

Glad the being preggers thing is treating you kindly. I'm still pretty ill myself but I'm just about to start an epic regime of diet and suppliments to try and heal my gut problem so I'm pretty positive about that. I'm gonna try and vlog about it all if the diet and meds don't fck me up too bad.

Who knows, maybe at steemfest 2019 I'll be able to keep up with all the party people instead of succumbing to chronic fatigue lol.

Or make those travel dreams reality in 2019 😎

oh I'm glad you're trying a new diet, I hope it helps! You seem to eat pretty healthy already, so maybe it's just a matter of cutting out a few bad habits =)

I hope to make it too this year, but we will be 3 this time around, so I'm not sure yet how this will all play out.... LOL

Nah... I've got a severe gastrointestinal condition called SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). It isn't immediately apparent from looking or speaking to me but I'm pretty much in discomfort and stomach pain constantly. But I've put a lot of research into different natural protocol to follow after the last course of antibiotics the GI specialist gave me just made me sicker so I'm hopeful that I can improve my symptoms.

The diet changes are really extreme. Basically nothing with starches in, so no rice no bread no pasta no beans and no sugars. It's pretty much a selection of veg, fish and eggs I am allowed to eat on this diet. It's a super complex condition to treat.

Anyway, might be posting about it soon. lol I could rant about it for England 😂

P.s. it would be great to see you both and the new little steemian at sf4 but I'll forgive you if it's not possible 😉

wow that sounds awful Rowan!!! I really hope it works though =( Sorry to hear you're in constant pain. I can't even imagine...

I have some accidental compost in my yard. Basically we have these large green bins that we're supposed to throw organics in for the council to collect every fortnight. I put my grass, tripped hedges etc into it and occasionally some banana peels and such kitchen stuff. Sadly the council is incompetent and they often miss the collection, so they're left there for a month. I end up with these large gunky piles every month. Maybe I should start selling the stuff to my neighbours that are into gardening.

Yes you should, definitely!!! Your garbage is gold 😜. Here they sell that stuff pretty expensive

I cleaned my gutters this summer, including one that was hard to reach and hadn't been done for a couple of years. I found that there were very few leaves in it - it had all turned to rich soil! That got me started on making my own compost pile. But instead of just tossing things in a pile, I took some old heating ductwork and made small metal enclosures for it. That worked really well because it trapped the sun's heat and it seems to be breaking down quicker.

A side benefit is I have less waste to toss in the garbage each week - it goes into my homemade composting bin instead. Looking forward to using this for gardening material this spring.

oh this is a fantastic idea! Yes, the heat will definitely make everything break down faster =). And it's truly much better to not throw food scraps in the trash...they make everything smell bad. My trash is "clean" now lol.

Hey @evecab nice to see the little preparation and the little garden that you have. .but how about considering boiled tea left over as compost. I heard it is quite good and helpful for plants. You mentioned no cooked item.
Anyway, I just wish you get to your own property ....owning and planting in own property have different enjoyment. In India there are too many limitation and you can't even drill on the rented property.
Btw I love that cat😉

Hey @steemflow, I'm using tea as well, but i don't drink tea as often as I drink coffee =) But definitely a great ingredient also!

Yes..that true....👍

Hi @evecab nice to know you 've been following you since the @cleanplanet video you put up. Love your compost! Nice and dark. I've been trying my own compost at my backyard at hometown. Its been a few weeks now and its going pretty well I would say. Will post a video about it anytime soon.
