Account Security

When dealing with blockchain technology there is no intermediary for recovery of funds or keys, we have to be certain to take all the proper measures to ensure our own security.

Private Vs Public Keys

Found under the permissions tab.

• Private, these keys should never be shared with anyone!
  Posting-Private, is meant to be used for sign in through a portal which you wish to give access for upvoting, posting, resteeming, and following.
  Memo-Private, is used for sending secure messages that can be used to verify the message originated from the account owner.
  Active-Private, used for the internal exchange or transferring STEEM/SBD.

• Public, these keys are viewable by anyone simply by going to steemd.com/@username
  Memo-Public, Used for decryption of messages sent from private key and vice versa used to send a message that can only be decrypted with the private key.

Backup

• ALWAYS use randomly generated password.
• Use seperate passwords for each step of backup, preferably randomly generated as well.
• Old school method first, write it in a book, 2 separate locations, under lock and key!
• USB, encrypted file with my Bitdefender digital wallet, password protected drive, randomized passwords, one stays on me the other will be placed in a safety deposit box at the bank.
• NEVER backup to your email!
• NEVER screen capture your keys!
• NEVER share your keys!

Scams

Beware of anything that is out of the ordinary! Do not click links you do not recognize including links hidden with markdown from authors your unsure of.

• Phishing Scams, often look like the real deal, many people recently have been tricked by the newest scams.
• Never send your keys in a Memo, make sure it is placed in the correct box when sending memo's.

Account Recovery

You only have 30-days to recover your account from the day it has been taken over, after that the process is blocked! The recovery process is done manually and requires you to have your previous password and username. You must do the recovery from the affiliate that you signed up through such as busy.org or anon.steem.

Use the Correct Key

You do not want to have your Owners/Master key stolen through any possible hack of a portal! Your keys are not stored anywhere on the steemit network or the steem blockchain thus giving anything but your private Posting/Active/Memo keys to 3rd party sites could result in losing your account. Keep the owner key offline as much as possible with the exception being when it needs to be changed to disable the other private keys.
