Dreams, do they have an impact on our lives?

in #dreams6 years ago

Yesterday I woke up all distressed and pissed off. The remnants from a dream were still swimming around in my mind and for a few minutes I was confused and could not understand why I was feeling this way.

The Dream - I was at school, yeah really! I had won a place to travel to Italy for some tournament, but had decided to head to the airport alone and not with the rest of the group. Trouble is my passport had not accompanied me. The plane left and I was no longer going.

Just a stupid dream, but is it? I’m one of these people who need my eight hours sleep. That’s a third of my life in dreamland. Yes, I not dreaming for all those hours; I really don’t know how many hours I’m experiencing dreams, and how many are dreamless.

The point is that this is a full third of my life not in reality. So stupid dreams or not, they are real enough when I’m experiencing them.

The other two thirds of my life I’m awake and experiencing reality, but why is that more real than my dream world?

When I missed that plane, was I likely frowning while my head was lying on the pillow and were more lines of worry being created on my forehead?

I wonder sometimes, if we slept 16 hours a day and only spent 8 hours in this real world, would we think differently about this?

Would the dream world then be considered more important than that stupid other reality than we have where we work, drive cars and eat food?

It’s great to wake up and find that all those worries in your dream are not real and have just been wiped out by simply waking up.

What if we could go to sleep and all our real life worries could also be wiped out, the debts are gone, the mortgage is paid, you didn’t really get fired today but you also didn’t really win the lottery?

OK, so real life carries over to the next ‘session’ whereas dreams end and don’t really continue.

Still, I feel like some of those damn lines on my head are a result of me forgetting to pick up my passport.

I have had quite a few dreams where I wake up and it takes me a while to realize whatever circumstance I was in, isn't the reality I thought it was. It is a curious thought about wondering if the opposite is true. I would say that sometimes it is. For example, there are times when I have an issue in the real world that is really bugging me. I go to sleep and the issue goes away. When I wake up in the morning, sometimes the issue isn't really as big of an issue as I thought it was. I know it's not exactly what you were saying, but it kind of fits...

My mum used to say, think about it in the morning, you'll feel better then and, just as you say, either it wasn't such a big issue or I'd forgotten about it entirely 😊 I say it myself now 😎

I wake up in the night and worry about RL stuff often. In the morning it get shaken off, and no longer seems a big deal. That happens more often than the dreams.

Dreams can be so intense sometimes, I remember reading once dreams vary from seconds to up to 20 Minutes, and most people dream very 90 Minutes, which always makes me wonder what happens in all the dreams I dont wake up remembering

Only 20 minutes? it seems longer than that.., some are more intense than others for sure.

I was surprised when I read that as well

I love dreams. I think you can learn a lot from them. Journeys usually represent the "journey through life" (in my opinion). School means you're learning something. If you miss transport, it generally means you're concerned that you're missing out on something in life, or you're worried that life might be passing you by in some way. This is just my interpretation, based on dreams I've had. If I'm concerned that an aspect of my life isn't working out as well or as quickly as it should, I sometimes dream that I'm missing a bus or train. Or I'm on a train, but going in the wrong direction. And it might not be that things aren't actually working out - just that I'm worrying too much about it.
Who knows whether our lives are "reality" anyway? I sometimes wonder if, when we die, we instantly "wake up" somewhere else and think - "That was a weird, scary dream! I was just about to be run over by a truck!"

I have just started a new job and am learning lots again, is that a factor I wonder?

I had a book about dreams and their interpretations when I was a teenager, no idea what happened to it or whether the content was all made up?

"That was a weird, scary dream! I was just about to be run over by a truck!"

Maybe it will happen. If this isn't real and is a dream that last years, we may all 'wake up' sometime.

I think the new job is probably a factor. Change is unsettling, even when it's good change, and it often triggers vivid dreams. I did my first ever solo wild camp a few days ago. I slept quite well, but I had a really weird dream that I opened my tent and a small animal rushed in and started biting me!
I went through a phase of reading dream interpretation books. Then I realised that the interpretations always varied wildly from book to book. Maybe the authors believe they are true. I don't know.

realised that the interpretations always varied wildly from book to book.

Haha, yes this is the problem. Anyone can write anything but there's no facts to back up any of this. When I was a teen, I was drawn to this kind of stuff.

It's horrible isn't it, when you wake up like that, very unsettling. I don't seem to dream so much now, or perhaps my memory is going hehe. Strange idea that forgetting your passport all that time ago is contributing to wrinkles now 😱

I don't get so many either, I do wonder about the wrinkles :)

Bad dreams are the worst. If bad enough, they can throw off your whole, day, whole week even...

You must be more susceptible than me! A few minutes bad vibes is all I get after waking.

Usually its not too bad.
I have very realistic dreams sometimes though. There's been a time or two that I have dreamed something awful, like my children being killed or something like that, and it was so realistic that I woke up thinking it HAD happened. Something like that can put you in a funk...

Luckily that doesnt happen too often. :)
