Julia was sold into slavery at the age of five for one silver dollar. She was forced to sing on the streets or risk a beating.
When Julia reached 12 years old she was sold to a local pimp to earn a living pleasing men coming from America. She had two kids by the age of 18 years old and dreamt of running to America.
Her childhood friend Miguel promised to help her escape, and one day the opportunity came. Miguel told her to meet him at the playa and a boat would be waiting to take them to America.
My heart goes out to Julia. Such a short short story yet so powerfully conceived.
why is everyone so sad, i don't get it .. its just a quick story. LOL
