Diary of Lisa

in #dogs7 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemians,

When Lisa (my labrador retriever) got sick I kept a diary. This diary I will translate and place it on Steemit.

Read the introduction [https://steemit.com/dogs/@annie1968/my-sweet-lisa]

I hope that other dog owners will learn from this. In addition, I hope to get in touch with people who also have a dog with AIHA.

The beginning of the nightmare..

Lisa got sick December 2013 ... bad diarrhea, no longer wanting to eat and totally not fit.
During the weekend we went to the vet who suspected it was a virus infection. For this she received medication which helped

And from that moment on, this nightmare began!!

She has had a lot of research, a lot of medication, X-rays were made because we thought of a hernia or HD. This did not turn out to be the case. Then, on the advice of the vet, made an appointment with a physiotherapist for dogs.
Again to the vet on weekends because she had pain and I found that this could not wait until Monday. The diagnosis back pain, again painkiller.

A week later, no improvement and so the X-ray for the elbows was already scheduled. It turns out that on her one leg is a hump ...

There are no X-rays taken but antibiotics, prednisone and metacam for the pain.
However, Lisa became sicker and paler.

When the blood had subsided, it was immediately clear that this was not good ... her blood as thin as water !!!

The waiting for the blood results was killing! After 2 days, the results were available. Lisa was so sick that we were urgently referred to Utrecht University. The diagnosis was not clear yet but she had a severe anemia!

Intake intensive care May 2, 2014

Immediately after arriving at the hospital we were picked up by a doctor. Lisa was laid down on a stretcher. She was so sick that she had no strength to walk herself anymore.

After examination and blood tests the diagnosis was made .... AIHA an autoimmune disease, (autoimmune hemolytic anemia)

Lisa breaks her own red blood cells! The value of the hematocrits (Ht) was only 11%.A normal value is between 40% -60%.

That same evening, Lisa had her first blood transfusion.

We were allowed to say goodbye to her. This farewell was very emotional, not knowing if I would see her alive again

We could not stay in Utrecht so we returned home. Uncertain if Lisa would come through the night. Arrived at home, we immediately logged in with a code that allowed us to follow Lisa live through a monitor. All I could do is look at that monitor.

Wish you all a very nice day ♡

sad story, it must be so hard for you .

@rocky1 This was emotionally a very difficult time. She has a whole medical history. But she is still alive ... I'm going to translate from the journal and put it on steemit.

that must have been so hard, whats the progress on lisa situation now?

she is still sick. and there is no chance of getting better. Every 2 weeks she needs a blood check. Because of the prednisone she got cushing disease.
Now she has other medication, she does not get better but she still has a nice life. She is very happy and enjoys life.

its a good thing u made her very comfortable, am sure she will be grateful to u forever

Poor Lisa. At least you were able to still see her with the monitor. I know it is not the same but that must have helped. That was 3 years ago. How is he doing now? Very traumatic thing for both of you.

@whatisnew For now she is doing quite well. About every two weeks where testing her blood. She is still on medication and I think that she needs them her whole life. But even though she is sick she is a happy dog. Still very happy, enjoying her life. I soon will post an update.

I am so happy to hear the good news about Lisa's health. She is happy and enjoying her life...ONLY because of you! (((((annie1968))))). ((((( ))))) = HUGS! : )
