"Bed of Roses" Design, No. 1
When I released my last EP Panoptic, I really wanted to do a music video for my song "Bed of Roses", in which I would go through the mirror of my black and white real world into a very colourful desert - where I would meet Lady Death who would take me away to another world.
The video never panned out mostly due to scheduling issues that were beyond my control, but I did make quite a few prep designs and marketing materials to promote it.
Even though I'll probably never make the video at this point (it's been too long since the song's been released.. time for something new), I still put out the designs as merch on my threadless store, if only because I liked them!
Anyway, here's the process video for the first of the designs, which is a graphic representation of my face as Lady Death (or Dia de la Muerta). You'll see at one point I actually trace of photo of myself, as I wanted it to be as accurate as possible (I know, I know... cheating!).
The "halo" I actually designed in Illustrator separately, so unfortunately I don't have a process video for that piece of the puzzle, but hopefully you enjoy seeing the process for putting the drawn parts together.
I did this on my iPad Pro using the Procreate app as well as the Apple Pencil, and including the halo it took me about 12 hours to complete the coloured version. I also wanted this to work as a black and white street-style piece, so that is also available.

haha thank you! Yes the famous hair is soon to be chopped off for a music video... D: It's time for a reset anyway. But it's going to be weird having short hair!

I loved this image from the first time I saw it -- months ago, when we were in that "unmentionable group." (Ironic, that name, isn't it -- considering?) It looks so much like the Mexican folk art that accompanies Día de Muertos. That's big deal in Mexico, and being so close -- and having such a high percentage of Hispanics in this state, I was real familiar with the theme and the style.
For a long time, I thought that was your iconic image. I didn't realize it was done for a single project. Nor did I realize you drew this yourself. (Wow, am I impressed!!) Wonderful job!! You have far more than the legal limit of talent. Karma's going to get you for that someday, you know.

Thank you!! Well to be fair I was intending it to be somewhat iconic - but it's 100% based on the Mexican folk art for Dia de Muertos. Not only do I think it's gorgeous styling, but the meaning behind the imagery matched what I was trying to say in the song, so it made sense to me to use.
