DLive Southern Utah Series #6 - Lower Calf Creek Falls

in #dlive6 years ago (edited)

After leaving the Kanab area of Utah and visiting Peekaboo Canyon, @toddhata and I drove north and east to get to the Escalante region of Utah which is a couple hour's drive through beautiful landscapes and passing very close to Bryce Canyon. Video of that place coming soon.

We weren't quite sure what to do once we got there so we stopped at the visitor's center in the town of Escalante to ask about some awesome things in the area to do. There were plenty. A lot. We only had time to do one so we picked one that was close to the road we were driving on and that wouldn't take up half a day because we didn't have many hours of sunlight left. The activity we chose to do was hiking Lower Calf Creek Falls. It's named this because the creek is in a canyon that acted as a natural pen for cattle back in the wild west days.

Just the drive to get there was stunning but the hike let us get right in the middle of all the natural beauty of Utah. 3 miles of towering cliffs striped with minerals that looked like an artists canvas. Photos can't capture it well at all. There are even pictographs painted on one of the rocks near the path that the Fremont tribe of Native Americans put on there about 1,000 years ago.

After 3 miles, you get to the end of the Canyon and see a huge waterfall plunging from the top of the cliff almost 90 feet above the ground. There is something poetic about waterfalls in the desert. It's the stuff of parables and stories that are never written down but repeated for generations.

And let's all take the time to appreciate this sign near the waterfall.

Lower Calf Creek Falls is an awesome hike to do when you're in Southern Utah. It's actually one of the most scenic I've ever done. Stay tuned for more from this region so be sure you're following me.

Have you been to a waterfall in the desert?
