In this chapter of Hong Kong Snapshot, we keep looking for the footsteps of Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of modern China. Sun is one of the greatest Chinese in the history, He brought China to the modern society in the 1910s and changed China, changed the world. In the last chapter of Hong Kong Snapshot, I talked about the early years of Sun. You may take a look if you missed it: https://steemit.com/travel/@aaronli/hong-kong-snapshot-89-story-of-sun-yat-sen-founding-father-of-modern-china-starts-89

You may never think of a great man who changed China and the world, left so many footprints in HK, such a small bit of land. It’s all because of history. History brought a lot of Western technology, thoughts and ideas to HK, which changed Chinese. Without it, China may still remain the imperial system.

Education was the most important element for Sun to change China. He learnt from Western School during his young age. He learnt the most modern theory of the world and it let him know the fall behind of China. Last time, we introduced the former Diocesan School and Orphanage, the first school Sun studied in HK. And less than one year after, Sun moved to the Government Central School, our topic today.

The Government Central School was a very famous school in HK. It was found in 1862 which is the first governmental School of HK. All foreign students in HK studied in the school. In 1884, Sun moved to the Government Central School. At the same year, the school announced the campus expansion which was at PMG in Central today. Sun attended the stone-laying ceremony which was held by Sir George Bowen, Governor of HK. He spent 3 years studying in the school which changed him by the Western Education.

The Government Central School was the highest level of Education in HK until 1910. In 1910, to prevent the invading of Japan in the future, the HK Government needed a lot of war related professional like engineering and medical which led to the establishment of the University of Hong Kong, while the Government Central School remained as a secondary school in HK.

After World War II, the Government Central School, now named of the Queen’s College, moved to Causeway Bay. It is now still one of the best secondary school of HK and output numbers of significant alumni who are influential to HK and China. They included: Tang Shaoyi, first Prime Minister of the Republic of China; Henry Fok, former Vice-chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; Sir Robert Ho Tung, former General Manager of Jardine Matheson; Cheung Ng-sheung, world famous economist; Lai Man-wai, Fahter of Hong Kong Cinema; Lee Wai Tong, greatest Chinese footballer ever, etc.

Now, the old campus of the Government Central School becomes PMG, a new venue for arts and design in HK.

You can see studios, shops and offices for creative enterprises in PMQ. You can find shops with products of local brand. Tourists must love it. Maybe, when you visits the shops in PMG, you just step into the classroom that Sun was studying.
