Steemit Zombies / Deadpost Initiative chat - Don’t let your best work sit in the graveyard

in #discord7 years ago (edited)

It is I, the Steemit Necromancer, otherwise known as a pineapple. In an effort to combat the ever increasing memes, spam, uninteresting formulaic posts and mindless steemit/crypto fapping, I call forth an army of zombies to wreak havoc upon the steemit ecosystem. We will spam spam with spam, only our spam will be high quality content which has been overlooked. I invite all users who feel their hard work has gone unnoticed for too long to join us in filling our feeds with interesting and high quality zombie posts.

Being a Necromancer is merely a part time job for me, my main passions are making music, writing fiction, and essays, and keep the Deadpost initiative(which will continue alongside steemit zombies) and the Be Awesome discord channel running, this project will need to be a community effort. As with the other projects I have started, feel free to think of me less as the one in charge and more as a “gatekeeper” and community curator of sorts.

I want to emphasize that this is not a whine-fest. Recognizing problems that exist is encouraged, but the focus will always be on maintaining a positive attitude and having fun as we search for solutions. We are not trying to make enemies of anyone, and we are NOT going to spend an excessive amount of time complaining. This is about “Being the change”, and trying to improve our own personal situations AND the situation of others who put in the work and make friends. We want to create a better ecosystem for everyone.

First we will need to discuss how we will operate this project. Will there be a standard or will it be a free for all?

I’m thinking somewhere along the lines of this:

  • In order to qualify as a valid #steemitzombies post, the first tag must be #steemitzombies. It is optional to add “Steemitzombies:” in the title of your post.
  • There must be an introduction in bold or italics at the beginning of your zombie post. Feel free to add some context. Why did you feel compelled to write this? Has anything changed? Also feel free to promo some newly created similar material by yourself or other users.
  • Feel free to screenshot some great comments you received if you did have a few readers.
  • I’m wondering if there should be a post payout limit on the original post. Maybe not? If there is one I believe it should be quite high. When some users easily make $100 per post on mediocre comment, I don’t see why we can’t invite as much for ourselves. If someone abuses the tag the community can decide to stop supporting them.
  • should there be a time frame? I believe post should be dead for a certain time before being revived, otherwise it doesn’t feel a bit spammy. A month? 3 months? We need to talk about this.
  • Eventually i hopen that we find some larger accounts who come to us to find quality material and great users to upvote. We will need to talk about how to go about doing that.
  • We will also need to discuss with the Deadpost community how to integrate these two ideas. Perhaps the Deadpost Initiative will becomes the Zombie Initiative.
  • we will also have to do some research about how to avoid problems with @cheetah and @steemcleaners

It seems that if a post does not get any traction in 36 hrs, it is doomed. Applying bot leverage via upvotes and resteems may keep the post breathing, but it still eventually drifts into a comatose state if it had no serious goose in the first 36 hours (spend time on trending, garnered whale attention, got a lot of early resteems, etc.) So I would say 30 day cutoff for eligibility for zombie status is about right. The post probably would have been dead for 29 days with that.

I think there should be a payout limit of about $15 on the original. Any much more then that and it will feel like a zombie post is only alive to chase another chance at another buck. Plus now, with the bid bots running amok, even with only modest use you can push a post to $5-10 (depending how much money you want to lose doing so) without a single live human reading it. I think what will most reanimate the deserving dead is the sting that ones hard work (and in a few cases heart and soul) was greated with a collective yawn the first time around, not that the post didn't make a hundred bucks.

I don't know how you would defeat the technology or the stigma that prevents one from plagiarizing oneself. I have had full intention to rework some old posts as I gained more followers as the three people who saw the original hopefully became 33 and then 133. But I was planning to do major revisions.

Perhaps zombie posts should be presented in an official html framework and graphic setting, something that visually sets them apart as resurrected, but friendly dead.

My thoughts for the moment. I will be back if I have more.

Very great input, I think $15 sounds nice and reasonable, waiting to hear how others feel, especially some of the users who have been here for longer and see some posts do great while most do quite poorly.

Come join the chat when you have a chance.

Great ideas, I second everything you have stated here. And I rarely say things like that.

I like the idea of an age requirement as it can help our spam be less spammy. I think four or six weeks is a good time frame because it is not so long that it excludes newer accounts but is long enough for that post to have been forgotten. I used the tag a few days ago and the post I used was about a month old maybe 27 days. Anyway, if it is a little longer than that, it is fine as long as there is a pretty clear line. Maybe people can make part of the, I don't know, necromancy statement, summoning ritual, [insert fun name here], to state how old the post is. "this post is over six weeks old" or "I posted this last month" or something.

I appreciate that you considered the suggestion I made about tag placement in an earlier comment. I won't restate them here but, to anyone else who may read this comment, there are a number of reasons that this is to our advantage.

I worry about bots also. I don't have the knowledge or the clout to do this but is there a way to contact whomever is responsible for them to have posts with the steemitzombies tag recognized as "not spam" or whatever? If there is it would allow us to police ourselves.

I wouldn't make this a rule but it might be good encourage revision too. This may help avoid bot troubles and will also increase the quality of the posts. It doesn't need to be rewritten but one could add a picture or a paragraph. We all should, for our own sake, proof read our content again and fix any errors we missed the first time.

you already know I'm behind this idea - I think you brought up quite a few real issues we should address - I like the idea of some loose rules surrounding what is considered a zombie, the "disclaimer" kind of introduction paragraph you talked about, and also avoiding flagging by cheetah and steemcleaners. <<< That's a big one for me and I'm sure for other people too

I do think a high cap sounds fair because you're right - some of these trash posts are raking in over $100 easily.

And I like the idea of a longer death date mainly because if we want to be taken seriously I think we should be promoting Steemians who've been putting in a decent amount of time into the platform. That really shows how hard it is to get a good payout - even if you have a decent amount of followers and experience on here. I think we should avoid a bandwagon approach where even very new users are putting up/recycling just-barely-a-month old posts with no payout.. because honestly, I feel like that is kind of expected for new people and I worry others would see it as whiny and begging for a payout.. posts that are at least like 2-3 months old proves this person is sticking with the platform regardless of the lack of payout. (JUST my opinion! maybe I have a biased view on this matter, no worries if anyone disagrees. ) I don't know! just some ideas

I just don’t want to create much of a “wait you’re turn” kind of vibe but I do agree that there are users who have worked hard for a long time and I would like to prioritize them. That seems to go against what every big initiative and big account does. They help the smallest among us get medium small, but then there’s not much upvote left to help the small get medium sized if they don’t happen to become a favorite of some bigger fish.

Maybe we can offer some other kind of program for new users. Hmmm.

I also agree with the previous comment that setting the bar too high may turn a lot of people off from this as it may just look like a grab for money, there are even some who will use it that way, and even though I don’t want to conform to some established ideas, we do need to think about how to bring in some upvotes besides our own

This will take some more discussion and we need to see who ends up in our chat.

I was thinking of turning the Deadpost Initiative into more of a weekly curation post for zombie posts but how we would do that effectively without much sp among us and how to choose which posts make the mention is the question.

I totally agree with the small/medium fish issue and there are so many out there helping new people but once you hit 50+rp I feel like there's not as much support. This will definitely need to be hashed out within the group but there are great topics and issues to go over ! It's a starting point :)

how do we avoids it to be a lot abused "What I mean by abused is when people do not inform us or its a new post"
if this is going to be something big, it will be a lot of people who use the tag without information
like now its 50/50 on the lacking of info. Maybe it's a #steemitzombies if one only uses one tag. Anyway, it's a great idea, its a lot of gold out there.

Well what I’m thinking is...the kind of people who want to abuse this idea aren’t likely going to go far with it. If we create a community of support and there’s a chance to make new friends and get more upvotes by respecting others and NOT trying to take advantage then I don’t see much of a problem. The only issue is that we currently don’t have much sp among us, but I’m hoping that if we pool our resources and offer resteems from larger minnow accounts, then we could make it all worth while.

Yes it is true. Maybe I'm a little negative. When I'm thinking about it, it will be very easy to see if someone does not write anything about it. so obviously easy not to upvote.
