TacoCat's TrEats #14: Dim Sum lunch at Peach Garden!

It was my birthday a week ago and we went to celebrate by eating a delicious dim sum lunch! 😋
I briefly wrote about dim sum before, as part of my Singaporean Snacks series which you can check out here! But just to refresh your memory if you're not familiar, Dim sum is a style of Chinese cuisine (particularly Cantonese) consisting of small bite-sized portions of food served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Dim sum is typically served with tea or eaten for brunch.
For my birthday lunch, we headed to a restaurant called Peach Garden, in a hotel near the city but it was still a little 'ulu', or inaccessible (unless you have a car of course). It was inside an old hotel called Hotel Miramar.
The restaurant interior is pretty okay, but a little drab. You could tell it's pretty old from the carpets and the chairs. But overall, it's still quite clean and decent.
We didn't expect it to be that crowded when we arrived for lunch around 1pm. There were still a few open tables though, but we had made a reservation anyway. Then we saw that they had a pretty good discount for the dim sum; 50% off on Mon-Sat and 30% on Sundays. That would put their average price at around $2-3 a plate! But, we had a $50 voucher anyway, that couldn't be used in conjunction with the discount so we settled for ala carte pricing.
We ordered a lot of food! 😋
Since we had to hit the $50 limit, we ordered 9 dishes in total! We had our usual favourites; char siew bao (BBQ pork buns), siew mai (shrimp and fish roe wrapped in flour skin), liu sha bao (egg custard buns) and xiao long bao (pork and soup dumplings)!
We also bought radish cake (aka carrot cake). It's not a dish we would typically order even though we like it because it is very filling. But their radish cakes were actually pretty tasty and quite crispy! 😋
We had to stack the baskets to keep our dishes warm because there were too many to eat at once!
My all-time favourite dim sum dish is definitely the deep fried prawn roll in beancurd skin. I'm not exactly sure what's the name of this dish in Cantonese, but it's the one wrapped in seaweed above. It's crispy and filled with prawns. Yummy! 😋
Anyway, that's not all we ordered!
Against our better judgement, we decided to get the glutinous rice as well. I could only eat a few spoons of the rice because I was so stuffed! 😔
We also bought mini egg tarts for "dessert". It was really yummy though! The custard was the right consistency and wasn't too runny, the crust wasn't too dry. Just right. 🤤
Overall, it was a really great meal! I would definitely not mind eating there again on a regular weekday with the 50% discount. Maybe for another special occasion? 😉
