TacoCat's TrEats #13: What to eat in Finland - Kebab!

in #finland6 years ago (edited)

Hey Steemit!

I'm back again with yummy stuff to eat in Finland, and now that my Travel series is caught up to Rovaniemi, I can post about one of my favourite dishes in Finland - döner kebab! This may sound strange, since kebab is Turkish food, but it's actually really yummy! And, since it's a pretty affordable meat we ate it fairly often. Singapore also has kebabs but it's somewhat pricey over here so I'm glad we got to eat it as much as we did in Finland.

Anyway, even if you've never had döner kebab before, I'm sure you've at least seen something like this:

It's a Turkish kebab, made of seasoned meat stacked in an inverted cone cooked on a vertical rotisserie. A huge vertical chunk of meat rotating in a hot chamber giving off smells of meat heaven. 😍🤤 Sorry vegetarians.

The kebab was originally invented in the 19th century Ottoman Empire, and inspired similar dishes such as the Arab shawarma, Greek gyros, and Mexican al pastor. I've heard of shawarma from the Avengers movies, and now that I know it's inspired from kebabs I really want to try it! I wonder if there are any in Singapore.? 🤔

There are many serving options for the doner kebab; on a plate with various sides, stuffed into a pita or other type of bread as a sandwich, or wrapped in a thin flatbread such as lavash or yufka, known as a dürüm. Since the early 1970s, the sandwich or wrap form has become popular around the world as a fast food dish. It generally contains vegetables such as tomato, lettuce, cabbage, onion with sumac, cucumber, chili, and various types of sauces.

We ate various types of kebabs; on a plate, in a sandwich and in a wrap, but I believe the first one we tried was on a plate in Rovaniemi.

It was quite a big portion, and the 2 of us were full even though we shared a plate. It was pretty cheap too; I believe it was €8.50 for this plate which includes rice, salad and potato wedges. It doesn't look like a lot of meat from the picture but that's because they're hidden under all the wedges. 😅

It was so good we went back to the same restaurant a few times; trying their fries as well. The wedges were better and seemed more though.

I think the reason why the sandwich and wrap versions have become more popular is because people just don't have the time to really sit down and eat at a restaurant these days. We're always on-the-go, rushing from point A to point B, and sometimes sitting and eating just takes up too much time. These takeaway options are perfect as they can be eaten as a meal or a snack, anytime, anywhere.

I know when I'm busy I try to multitask like eating while studying, or eating while traveling. But when on holiday I think it's good to kick back and relax a little, and really enjoy your meal. What do you think?

Thanks for reading!
