Pattern of the week/Anleitung der Woche: Clapotis [Ger/Eng]

Es gibt eine schier unübersichtliche Anzahl von Strick- und Häkelmustern für alle möglichen Projekte, von nützlichen (aber nie langweiligen) Socken bis hin zu schönen Schals, von Kinderspielzeug bis hin zu Dekorationen. There is a myriad of patterns for knitters and crocheters for all kinds of projects, from useful (but never boring) socks to lovely shawls, from children's toys to decorations. They are available in books and magazines, online or directly from person to person.

This year I want to present you a pattern each week, and they will all have these commonalities: They will be available at no cost, and they won't be difficult. They might introduce a new technique, but will help you learn it.

Clapotis - quick and versatile

Clapotis ist keine neue Strickanleitung - sie wurde vor mehr als 15 Jahren im Online-Magazin Knitty veröffentlicht. Es ist ein Schultertuch, das sich leicht als Schal machen lässt. Es ist ein Rechteck, das man in einer Ecke anfängt, bis zur gewünschten Maschenzahl zunimmt und dann so lange strickt, bis man die gewünschte Länge hat und wieder bis zur Ecke abnimmt. Und dann kommt der Clou: Man lässt Maschen fallen!

Clapotis is not a new knitting pattern - it was published in the online magazine Knitty more than 15 years ago. It's wrap that can be easily made as a scarf. It's a rectangle that you start in a corner, increase till you have the desired stitch count and then knit till you have the desired length and decrease to the corner. And then comes the chief attraction: you drop stitches!

Dies geschieht nicht nur weil es sehr dekorativ ist, sondern es erhöht auch die Länge des Tuches: das für eine Masche benötigte Garn ist etwa dreimal so lang wie die Masche breit ist. This is not only for reasons of decoration, but it adds to the length of the wrap: the yarn needed for a stitch is about three times the length of the stitch itself. And it's really decorative, too: if you use a self striping yarn or one with a color gradient, this gradient will run in one direction and the "ladders" of the dropped stitches in another. The resulting cloth is airy and soft due to the dropped stitches.

Man kann den Clapotis mehr oder weniger breit machen, indem man einfach die Anzahl der Zunahmereihen ändert und die Länge durch Anpassung der Anzahl der geraden Reihen verändert. You can make your Clapotis more or less wide just be changing the number of increase rows and change the length by adjusting the number of straight rows. You can use all kinds of yarns - there are projects made with lace weight yarn, which makes a gossamer shawl, and those made with super bulky yarn which results in something more like an blanket.
