Daily Dose of Sultnpapper 10/21/18> An evening out at Daisy’s Diner

in #dailydose6 years ago (edited)

An evening out...

Seldom do the Mrs and I have an evening out by ourselves but on Saturday evening I got roped into going out to dinner at a little place that just sort of popped up. So the plan was that we go eat at this diner and then go to the awards ceremony for Blondie’s Girl Scout troop Silver Awards and bridging ceremony where she would move up in the organization from a junior to a senior.

Daisy's Diner...

,
Dinner was at 6:30 and the awards ceremony was to start at 8:00 PM so we had plenty of time to just eat and visit. Blondie had to be gone all day with her troop so we didn’t have to take her with us, we would meet her at the ceremony location. To tell you how out of touch I am on some things by being gone so much is that the awards ceremony was also being held at Daisy’s Diner so the girls had spent the day decorating the place for their event that evening.

Only the parents...

Another thing I didn’t know was that only the parents of the girls were allowed to attend the awards ceremony which didn’t go over big with the rest of the family especially Blondie’s only living grandparent, PaPa. He has always been included in these types of things with all of his grandkids and so he felt really left out.

I had never heard...

I had never heard of Daisy’s Diner before but that shouldn’t be a surprise, eating joints open and close so fast around here there are plenty that aren’t open long enough to even give them a try. I think that has a lot to do with how people have become when it comes to eating out.

Trying new eating places...

I know twenty five years ago the Mrs. and I use to love going and trying new eating places as soon as they opened to see if the food was any good, now we have gotten to the point that we approach it as; let’s give it some time, if the place is any good at all it will be here for a while and we can eat there later, a few months or so isn’t going to make a difference to us.

Out of business...

Plus by then we know that some friends will have eaten there and given us their restaurant review on the place and so we will at least have some indication if it is even worth trying at all. There was a place that opened up a couple months ago over next to the bank we bank at and it was a Cajun chicken wing place, the location was an old Wendy’s hamburger joint that had gone out of business, I noticed the wing place was already out of business when I had to go get that cashier’s check last Monday.

Limited menu...

So I can safely say that Daisy’s Diner is one place that it was good we got checked off early, the menu was limited. Unless you like burgers or chicken fried chicken with mash taters and gravy or a salad you are pretty much SOL. The whole menu fit on one 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper and that included the appetizers and drinks, printed just on one side, so to say the choices were limited would be an understatement for sure.

Limited seating...

The place had very limited seating; we actually ended up eating at a table for six, with two other couples. Luckily for us, Daisy’s was a popular choice that evening with some other parents from the girl scout troop so at least we knew the folks we ate with or at least had something in common them. These two look like they have been waiting a while to get seated , so I tipped the hostess a ten spot to get seated.

Back from Georgia...

The one couple was the parents of the girl in the troop that had ended up having to move to Georgia a while back so it was good to be able to eat with them and catch up with Justin and Beth on how life in Georgia is treating them. They had flown back from Georgia with their daughter for this awards ceremony, the silver award is the second highest award that a girl scout can earn so this really is a big deal in terms of scouting.

More waitresses than tables...

One thing Daisy’s Diner wasn’t short on was waitresses. The place appeared to have more waitresses than it had tables. Usually that isn’t the case with most restaurants, most places will have one waitress for four or five tables but Daisy’s was over staffed in the waitress department, our table for six had three different waitresses taking care of us. Each couple had their own waitress, talk about an awkward situation that was for sure.

Our waitress was...

Our waitress was a young high school girl and it was pretty obvious to both the wife and I that this girl isn’t cut out for waitress work. She was pretty nervous and she never would even crack as much as a half of a smile. All of her questions were short and in a very quiet voice, luckily for me she was at least standing on my left side which is my good ear side, or I wouldn’t have even stood a chance of hearing what she was asking me.

She did at least...

She did at least bring us our drinks in a timely fashion once she got our drink order, and most waitresses with experience know that ice tea needs more ice than cokes or sodas but my tea didn’t have much ice in it and it didn’t last long so the tea wasn’t cold for very long.

This diner was in...

This diner was in a converted house so the kitchen space wasn’t very big I am sure and the food prep area most certainly had to be a crowed spot since it seemed like all the waitresses wanted to gather in there, out of site from their tables.

You are always waiting...

Getting drink refills would be a challenge, not just from our waitress but even the other two couples at our table had the same issues with their waitresses as well. Maybe that is why they are called “waitress”, because it seems like you are always “waiting” for them to do something for you or to bring you something.

The Route 66 sign...

I know the term now in the food service business is “server” but I am old school and diners are old school as well, so I still use the term waitress. The place was decorated in the 50’s diner theme and had a replica old juke box and the old style diner advertising on the walls. I don’t believe I have ever been in a diner that didn’t have one of the old “Route 66” signs in it, Daisy’s was no different they had a total of three that I was able to see.

A pretty good wait...

After we ordered our appetizers it was a pretty good wait to get them, I ordered the cheesy Mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce and the wife got a salad. The salad might have been the better choice since three cheese sticks is hardly what I consider an “order” even for an appetizer.

Food delivery timing...

The thing about eating at a table that is being taken care of by three different waitresses is the food delivery timing. None of three couples would get their food at the same time so then it was, “do we wait for the others to get their food or do we just go ahead and eat?” that was question that was going through each couples minds, well at least mine for sure.

Just dig in before it...

We didn’t get our appetizers first so we didn’t have to make that decision but when the first order showed up and that couple kind of held back eating I went ahead and suggested that the cheese sticks they ordered were probably not going to stay hot very long so they might as well dig in and eat before they got cold, so that got that situation out of the way.

That would come back...

That would come back to serve me well at dessert time, since we did get our desserts first and I will tell you that was the best part of the whole Daisy Diner eating experience. The food was okay and the wife ended up eating salad for her appetizer and also a salad for her meal with a small bowl of fruit to accompany it. I had the chicken like I said with the mashed taters, gravy, homemade rolls and butter so I had no complaints in the food. The only thing was our waitress.

This girl won't make it...

I can tell you that this girl won’t make it as a waitress, not unless she comes out of her shell when it comes to serving people food. It might not have helped the situation any that I called her “sweetie”, “honey” and “miss” either but those are all names that diner waitresses are called all the time and most love it or at least accept it as part of the job.

Her name tag...

I do know that this was this young girls first go at being a waitress and most likely her last, her name tag said her name was Peggy Sue but I knew that wasn’t her name because I had seen her around the area before. Her real name is Katy, but most people who know her just call her Blondie, since she has the long blonde hair and definitely does things that would normally be associated with natural blondes.

The Daisy Diner...

The Daisy Diner was actually located at the Girl Scout leaders home, they moved all the furniture out of their living room and into the garage and set up tables and decorations in order to give it the diner theme and look. The girls had spent all day over there and cooking the pastries, prepping the food for cooking and getting things ready.

The clubhouse was...

They had come up with this idea and the subdivision club house that they normally meet at would have been the perfect place for this but unfortunately the club house was unavailable for Saturday night so the troop leader made her home available for the event.

Went off without...

The awards ceremony went off without a hitch and it was really a nice evening. These girls have been together as a troop for seven years now and over that time they have not added any girls. I think when they started they had about a dozen girls or so and they are now down to seven, including the girl who now lives in Georgia. She attends all the regular meetings by Skype, and fly’s back in for all the special events since her grandmother is the troop leader.

Has been presented her...

So Blondie has been presented her Girl Scout Silver award star and now has her sights set on earning her gold award, which is the highest award in the Girl Scout organization.

It was a good evening for all the parents, maybe not so much for the girls as they each had to serve as the waitress for their parents.

It was also good that we were seated with Justin and Beth; we had some catching up to do since they had moved. We were never close friends but Justin was also a Boy Scout troop leader and our youngest boy was a member of the troop that Justin led when our boy was in scouts. That troop ended up falling apart when they moved and our son had lost interest in the scouting so he never pursued joining another troop.

Today is busy day...

Today is a busy day as well, luckily I don’t have to get ready for church, unless I consider finding the remote for the TV as getting, but after the family gets back we have a annual event at one of the county parks that we go to each year and so we will be going to that.

I like the fact that...

I like the fact that the constable office has a presence at that event, always a good opportunity to try and educate a couple deputies on just what the law is and what their actually supposed to be doing instead of writing traffic tickets.

Nothing more than a ...

I know these guys who work as deputies think they are doing good for the community and they mean well, they have been lied to by the people they work under and are nothing more than a gang of highway robbers working the county roads and neighborhood streets instead of the main highways.

Their sole purpose...

Their sole purpose is to keep writing tickets so the judge can keep issuing fines over at the local court house. Those traffic fines are a multi million dollar operation just in that one small courthouse in our part of the precinct in the county.

Two other courthouses...

There are two other courthouses in our precinct and while I haven’t looked at those court records I have looked at this particular one and know for a fact that several million each year is being basically stolen from drivers in this area through the improper issuing of traffic tickets.

Okay, so I have got to get a fresh cup of coffee, so that makes this a great place to stop.

Enjoy your Sunday
Until next time,

Well, sir. You set me up pretty well with Daisy's Diner. That's a really pretty cool deal with the scout troop and making dinner for the parents and all.

They might have had girls waiting on other than their parents which would maybe give them a chance to flash a smile....

I thought of you and the highway robbers Friday morning. I didn't have internet and wanted to go to the store so went to WalMart at 0430. I saw a cop parked beside the road going the other way on a divided 4 lane street. did't think too much about it, except that this was Yuma PD not the Sheriffs department. When I went home there were lights flashing and I went way left to miss everybody. The county and state and Yuma PD were all represented for the loading of a vehicle on a rollback. This one may have been legit, though The car and the rollback were pointed the wrong way. I'd say probable DUI.

In the it's not politically correct corner, my brother's current rant is that DUI laws and punishment has gotten completely out of control. He's aware that there was a time that DUI was not much of a deal, his brother got 5. But now they impound your car and punch a hole in your driver's license right them. Interlock (breathalizer ignition) is mandatory which puts the minimum bill in the $6000 area. MINIMUM.

I have a friend that got certified to calibrate those interlocks. He gets $50 per each (the company gets $50 too) and every person has to have their interlock calibrated once per month. If you don't have a tech certify compliance to the state in a pretty narrow window your car is all don't starting because they can kill it remotely. Incredible money pit.

So. You aren't going to get much drawing in today, in spite of the additional time you have been granted on Sunday. I stand in solidarity with you and Peggy Sue.

Yes, I think the girls would have had more fun if they had drawn straws on who they waited on. But overall it wasn't that bad for them I even saw one waitress drink some of the Coke out of the glass she was serving to one of her customers, she had over filled it and was afraid of spilling it I guess.
The highway robbers do in some cases protect like in the case of getting DUI's off the streets but those cases are more the exception than the norm, that is for sure. I have to run, they just got home from church and that means we are headed out to the park. Be back in a few hours. Take care.

You caught me for a sucker with Daisy's Diner and Peggy Sue as well! Congratulations to Blondie on her Silver award star :)
Still can't believe I read all the way to the end without realising something was up with this restaurant review ;)

I have some pictures from last night that I should add to this post, in fact I think I will. So check back a little later. I was in a hurry this morning when I wrote it and didn't take the time to get them put in. I am going to do that right now.
You should know me by now Lizelle, I only review BBQ restaurants, so if you see something that looks like a review and it isn't BBQ something must be up with it.

Nice seeing some pics of Daisy's Diner, that one couple look like early Halloween guests ;)

Yes, they did. That's what happens when you don't tip the girl doing the seating I guess.

Oh goodness! I realized something was a little odd too but I didn't fully realize what happened until I saw your comment hahaha.... Well done, @sultnpapper, well done :). That was a fun spin, and hooray for the award whew

Thanks @eonwarped I had great fun both Saturday night and writing about it the way I did. I didn't think that I would trip so many people up with this approach but I guess I did. The girls did a great job with their Silver award project and with this awards ceremony night that they put together. They are a remarkable little group of teenagers.

Thank you so very much, a very nice surprise for me and the readers of the Daily Dose.

Congratulations on your curie mr Papper:)

Thank you Lizelle.

Thats interesting that is was parents only kind of sad, thanks for sharing your experience of this place

Yes, that made it kind bad for the other family members, the other kids and her Grandpa were pretty unhappy about it, but the clubhouse they use for the meetings has a high demand on Saturday nights and residents take priority when reserving it so, even though they thought they had that it wasn't until 10 days before the event that they found out differently and with the people flying in from Georgia and their plane tickets bought and paid for they did the best they could do. I know it won't happen again when they have their gold award ceremony I can assure you of that.

I see well perhaps it was a good learning experience for the organizers

It definitely was a good learning experience for the organizers, the organizers were the girls of the troop. Teresa is the leader, the adult, but she makes the girls be responsible for doing everything and when I say everything that means every bit.
The girls decide what projects they do, they decide how to do them, how they will fund them and they split up the work among themselves.
So when they contacted the property management company that takes of the subdivision where the clubhouse is located and were told that no one had booked the clubhouse for that Saturday night six weeks ago, the girls said great we need to use it. The response from the management company was, "that shouldn't be a problem." So the girls took that to mean that they had it booked.
But then the leader got the email saying, "we are sorry, but a resident has book the clubhouse for 10/20/18 so the clubhouse will not be available for your use." That sent everything into a tailspin. So the girls won't forget that for the next time with their gold awards. They made that clear on Saturday night, there were several of the girls who had other family members who were not able to attend because of the space confinements of the leaders living room.

thats great that the leader uses these opportuntites to teach the girls responsibility and planning something that is all to sadly missed these days

What wonderful memories you made that day!!! Thank you for sharing it with all of us!!

Very enjoyable for sure.

I'd be nervous serving my parents food for the first time! Good for Blondie getting her Silver Award, and for getting through that ordeal!

I can understand her lack of friendliness at that point of the evening she was in a lot of physical pain by then and she wasn't letting on to anyone so after it was over and on the way home she let us know just how bad off she was .
She spend the entire day either in bed sleeping or on the couch resting so was totally spent.

Aw poor wee Blondie! Waitressing is a tough job, especially the first time you do it!

It sounds you have had a lot of fun even though it was quite tight, but it is usually, when dinner before celebration where the parents of awarded people invited then they all try to come sometimes like you mentioned people have their grandparents who also want to be there and of course if there were so many waitresses that also contributed to the movements in such a small space. I can imagine that they were also a bit stressed. Seeing that little kitchen I would not volunteer to work in there. But luckily you have had a nice evening and nice company :)

Thanks for dropping by, yes, all in all it was a great evening.

I love that you simply put all your thoughts on a 'paper'. It's like I would be sitting next to you and you would be telling me your story.

It sounds like so much fun! I would be also nervous if I would be serving my parents. They can be very critical :) And what about food? Who was cooking it? Was it also the girls? At the beginning I didn't get this 'restaurant' and I thought: Well, that is a strange place :D Then I realized that you were kidding us! :)

Have a great day!

I like how Blondie got her name. Doesn't she mind being called like that? Congratulations on her award!

Most of the stories I have told over the years have been over a cup of coffee or a cold beer so I figured since that was the only way I know how to tell a story that we be exactly how I want people to imagine themselves when reading the Daily Dose, like we were sitting and having a cup of coffee or a brew. So it really makes me feel like I am conveying that sort of feeling when people tell me that like you have. So thanks for that and for reading and commenting too.
The girls were also doing the cooking and the two scout leaders were also in the kitchen pitching in so it was a team effort for sure. The girls baked cakes and pies earlier in the day for the desserts so they were busy the whole day.
Blondie doesn't mind it at all with the name, although her hair is getting a little darker each year. I will pass the congratulations along, she enjoys getting those from people here at the Daily Dose.
Thanks again.
