Jake looked from Pecky to Gilbert. He wasn’t sure he wanted to know what plan they’d hatched up. He was seriously considering leaving and convincing himself that it was all a dream and he’d wake up soon.

Then he saw Pecky’s face. Pecky, the rooster he’d never wanted, looked worried.

He sighed. “What do you have in mind?”

Pecky seemed to relax. Gilbert let out a breath.

These kids are a little bit older than you, but not much...

“They weren’t really comfortable talking to us, but we told them that a 12-year-old kid owned Pecky and would be very upset if his new pet just disappeared.”

They were interested in meeting you, but they think you are in danger, so they wanted to meet here.

Jake blanched. “I can’t meet to night. What would I tell my mom?”

“That’s where I come in,” said Gilbert. “I’ll tell your mom that there is a Chicken Hatching Seminar at 8pm Monday night and we’d really love to have you attend. I’ll find some way to contact the two kids we caught this weekend and ask them to attend the seminar too.”

Jake shook his head. “No way, she’d never go for that.”

What if he tells her there is the possibility of an internship coming out of it? Maybe he could mention how attending would help you with your story for school.

Jake wanted to protest, but the more he thought about it, the better the idea sounded. His mom would never turn down the opportunity for him to learn more, especially if it would help him with his stories.

“I don’t know,” he hedged. “I suppose it could work.”

“It’s worth a try, right?” asked Gilbert.
