'Born to be Mild' cycling adventures around Clumber Park, UK

in #cycling6 years ago (edited)

My brother and I went for a bike ride around Clumber Park, a country park in the Dukeries near Worksop in Nottinghamshire, UK and owned by the National Trust and open to the public. Unfortunately, the Clumber House mansion was demolished in 1938 along with the chapel. The park is listed Grade I on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens and covers 3,800 acres.

We cycled around the lake, riding over the bridge with the waterfall.

The lake was partially rebuilt in the 1980s and again in 2004 because of subsidence from local coal mining.

The park is regularly used by walkers and cyclists around the lake. The park also has bicycles for hire, a visitor centre, a shop, doggy friendly cafe, camping facilities, a gothic church and gardens.

English Longhorn cattle and Jacob sheep have been introduced to manage the grassland. We stopped to take a few photos and to spot the pike in the lake.

The bike ride was approximately 3 and a half miles long and was quite a gentle ride, mostly on the flat. It was just enough as it was quite a hot day. I would have liked to have cycled through the shallow ford but another cyclist advised us not to, as it was very slippery.

We popped into the Walled Kitchen Garden afterwards which was built in 1772. This was originally built to supply the Dukes of Newcastle with fruit and vegetables. It was a lovely day so it was nice to see all the flowers in full bloom, although a bit too hot in the greenhouses!

Until next time, thank you for stopping by.
