[Hanok Stay] 안동, 농암 종택에서의 하룻밤 // One night stay in Nong Am Jong Taek, Andong, South Korea

전 가끔 어릴 적 생각을 합니다.
어릴 때의 외갓집은 밭과 산에 둘러싸인 한옥이었습니다. 방학 때 마다 놀러 가서 온 종일 뛰어다니고, 앵두와 호두 등을 따먹고, 박스를 썰매 삼아 뒷 동산에서 타고 놀던 기억이 있습니다.

I sometimes recall my childhood.
Every vacation, I used to visit my grand parents' house which was a traditional Hanok.
It was surrounded by filed and mountains, so I used to run all the time, pick cherries, walnuts, and etc, and enjoy cardboard sled at the hill.

하지만 어느 샌가 터널과 고속도로가 생겨, 추억이 서렸던 곳이 모두 사라졌습니다.

However, all the things have gone with a new tunnel, and a highway.


이달 초, 경주, 안동, 태백 등 한국의 동쪽 지역으로 짧은 여행을 다녀왔습니다.
신라시대의 유물이 남은 경주는 정말 아름다웠지만, 관광지로서의 매력 뿐, 그 곳에서 살고 싶다는 생각은 들지 않았습니다.

Early this month, I traveled east part of Korea such as Gyeongju, Andong, and Taebaek.
Gyeongju which has all the artifacts from Shilla was beautiful, but I felt like it just was a sightseeing place.

안동 하회 마을 / Andong Hahoe Folk Village

경주를 지나, 가장 먼저 간 곳은 안동 하회 마을이 한 눈에 보이는 부용대였습니다.
아직도 사람이 살고 있는 기와집과 초가집. 참 색다른 풍경이었습니다.

After visiting Gyeongju, I went to Buyongdae Cliff, where I can see Andong Hahoe Folk Village at a glance.
It was so fascinating, and it was the first time for me to see a place where real people live in the traditional houses not only giwajib(tiled-roof), but also chogajib(thatched).

안동 하회마을로 직접 가보니, 제가 예상하던 것과는 조금 다른 모습이었습니다.
유네스코 세계 문화 유산인 만큼 유적지로 잘 보존 되어있는 곳이 있는 반면, 밖에 음료 자판기를 세워 두거나, 커피를 파는 등, 전통적인 모습으로만 남아 있진 않았습니다.
이왕 이 곳 까지 왔는데, 커피 보다는 장터 국밥에 막걸리, 전통 차만 취급하는 편이 더 좋지 않을 까란 생각이 듭니다.

Frankly, Andong Hahoe folk village as a bit differ from my expectation.
Since it was one of the UNESCO World Heritage, most buildings were well reserved, but I sometimes met things like vending machines, and coffee shops which are not our tradition at all.
I think it would be better to sell only Korean traditional food such as Gukbap(Rice soup), Makgeolli(rice wine), Tteok(rice cakes) and traditional teas, so that people can experience cultures of Korea fully.

농암 종택 / Nong Am Jong Taek

숙소로 잡은 농암 종택은 안동 하회마을에서 64.95km 떨어져 있는 곳으로, 차로 약 1시간 20분 가량 소요됩니다.

농암 종택은 농암 이현보 선생(1467~1555)의 종택으로 분천 마을에 있었으나, 1976년 안동 댐 건설 시 수몰 되면서 종택, 사당 등이 안동 이 곳 저곳 에 흩어졌습니다. 이후, 현재 농암 종택에 거주하시는 후손 부부께서 평생 모으신 돈으로 이 곳 도산면 가송리에 땅을 구입하여 건물을 하나씩 옮기셨다고 합니다.

Nong Am Jong Taek where I stayed one night was far from Andong Hahoe Folk Village(64.95km, 1 hour and 20 mins by a car), but it was worth visiting.

Nong Am Jong Taek was once belonged to Nong Am, Lee Hyun-bo(1467~1555) who was a literary scholar in Joseon Dynasty. It used to be in Buncheon village, but as Andong dam was constructed in 1976, the village was submerged, and all the buildings were scattered in Andong. After that, the descendants who currently live in the house bought lands here, Gasong-ri Dosan-myeon, and moved all the buildings to this place.

제가 묵게 된 곳은 옛 시절, 남자 손님이 드나들 수 있었던 사랑채였습니다.
전통적인 한옥은 화장실을 더럽게 여겨, 집에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에 화장실을 둡니다. 때문에 어릴 적 외갓집에서 밤마다 무서워하며 전등을 켜고 화장실에 갔던 기억이 있는데, 다행히도 이 곳에서는 방 옆에 화장실 겸 샤워실이 있었습니다.

The room where I stayed was "Sarangchae" where it used for the male guests in Joseon Dynasty.
At that time, people thought toilet was a dirty place, so it always was constructed far from the main building. Thus, even when I was young, I used to go to the toilet at night with a lantern during I stayed in my grand parents' house. It was scary.
Fortunately, this place changed the building a bit, so the toilet with a shower was just next to the room.

저는 숙소에서의 잠자리를 가장 중요하게 여깁니다.
제가 갔던 2월은 정말 추웠는데, 다행히 이 곳엔 따뜻한 난방과 두꺼운 이불이 제공 되어 편하게 잠을 잘 수 있었습니다. 따끈한 방에 누워서, 귤을 까먹고, 한지 사이로 솔솔 들어오는 차가운 바람을 맞으니 어릴 적 외갓집에 온 것만 같은 기분이라 참 좋았습니다.

For me, the most important thing as an accommodation is bedding.
The night in February was so cold, but this place provided the thick comforters, and the hot floor, so I was able to sleep deeply.
Lying on the hot floor, eating mandarins, feeling the cold wind coming through the paper windows, I felt like I was visiting my grand parents' house again.

정석 대로 라면 방바닥 아래에서 불을 때우는 온돌이어야겠지만, 온돌은 너무 손이 많이 가니, 일반 보일러로 바꾸는 것은 어쩔 수 없는 것 같습니다. 아래는 도산 서원에서 찍은 아궁이 사진입니다.

The floor is supposed to be Ondol, which one level of the floor is a big thick stone called Goodlejang, and each room is heated at Agungi by wooden fire. However, it's too troublesome to use, so it's been changed to use a Korean way of boiler. Below is the photo of Agungi taken from Dosan Seowon.

이 곳에서는 체크인 시 부탁 드리면 인당 8,000원 정도로 조식을 드실 수 있습니다.
주인 아주머니께서 직접 만드신 여러 나물과 국은 정말 꿀맛이었습니다. 또한, 아주머니께서 채식주의자셔서, 조미료를 사용하지 않으시며, 아예 채소로만 이루어진 반찬도 많습니다.

The breakfast is provided as 8,000 won per person. Since they need to prepare it, you need to tell the host for the breakfast when you check-in. All the dished were really good, and because the hostess was a vegetarian, she made all the things without using an artificial seasonings, and some dished were suitable for vegans as well.

농암 종택은 배산임수 형태로 지어져있습니다. 멋진 뒷 산 만큼, 앞에는 멋진 강이 자리 잡고 있습니다.

여름에 이 곳에 며칠 머물며, 낮에는 물장구와 수박을, 밤에는 별을 보며 찐 옥수수를 먹으면 정말 좋을 것 같습니다.

This place is loacted as "baesanimsu" which is the ideal house in Korea. There are mountains at the back side of the house, and front side, there is a river.

It must be good if I come here again during the summer, swimming in the river, eating a cool watermelons at daytime, watching stars, eating steamed corns at night.

다시 방문할 기회가 있기를.
